The statistics regarding the rate of church abandonment vary, including 70% (McConnell, 2007) and 88% (Walker, 2002), but are alarming even with the most optimistic of those results. While some of the statistics, such as the Lifeway study reported by McConnell (2007), show that up to half of those who leave eventually return to the church, the results are still disturbing to those in the evangelical community. “Depending on the study, we are losing the vast majority of teens raised in evangelical homes by the time they finish their freshman year of college…unfortunately none of our recent attempts to stem the tide appear to be working” (Baucham, 2007, p. 7). Is Baucham correct - are none of the attempts to reverse the trend working? One solution families can pursue to potentially stem the tide is to enroll their child in a Christian secondary school – but do these schools produce graduates who remain committed to their faith at rates different from the average?

Providing evidence of the long-term success of different private Christian school organizations, with success defined as graduates adhering to their faith, will not only assist parents with their educational selections but, by examining trends among organizations that are successful, this research will also provide Christian schools with ideas for how to best meet their stated faith-based mission.

Research shows more young adults leaving the church than remaining, resulting in many parents searching for ways to help strengthen the faith of their child. One of these potential methods is to enroll their child in a private Christian school, but does this result in an increased rate of continued faith adherence after high school graduation? Providing evidence of the long-term success of different private Christian school organizations will not only assist parents with their educational selections but, by examining trends among organizations that are successful, this research will also provide Christian schools with ideas for how to best meet their stated faith-based mission.

Studies have been completed on graduates of Christian universities or of students currently attending Christian secondary schools, yet no peer reviewed research was found that looks at the continued faith of graduates from Christian secondary schools. Additionally, completing comparisons between the outcomes of different organizations, such as the Association of Christian Schools International and the Society for Classical Learning, is another current gap in the literature. Do these schools, and school organizations, accomplish results that are significantly different?
