The aims of the workshop are to

1. Co-create a series of shared visions for Passive Microwave, Millimetre and THZ technologies

2. Share our assessment of the current state of technology

3. Shape our ideas for how we might speed up our progress towards our shared vision 1 which can inform and shape a future update of the EO Technology Strategy for UKSA

In addition to short coffee breaks, there is a longer break of an hour at lunchtime to catch up on emails and calls or develop your network through conversations with others at the event.

The materials generated from the workshop will be shared immediately with those attending and longer term will be used to contribute to the shaping of future research programmes

We will be in the Lesley Foster room.

We will be asking you to contribute to three main discussions:

1. What do you hope 2035 will look like for Terahertz, Microwave and Millimetre Technologies for Earth Observation Instrumentation? What are some of the challenges we may have addressed and the opportunities we have maximised?

2. Where are we in 2025 in relation to this aspirational vision? What are some of the current challenges that we urgently need to address? What are some of the drivers that are pushing progress with our technologies?

3. How might we start to move forward from here towards our desired future?

In the final part of the afternoon, you will choose which of the ideas starting to emerge from the third conversation you want to explore in more detail. This could be individually, in a pair or in a group.

Since 2012 he has been working in the European Space Agency following R&D activities related with RF passive hardware (filter synthesis theory, EM design, ferrite-based components, and high power prediction as well as advanced manufacturing techniques for RF passive hardware). He has also provided support to projects such as the MetOp-SG Scatterometer (particularly for the RF front-end), BIOMASS (high power aspects), and ELECTRA, among others.

He is currently part of the Microwave Instruments Section (EOP-FMM), Future Missions and Instruments Division, where he is working on the early study phases for new microwave remote sensing instruments. He has been involved in missions such as EE11-SEASTAR and EE12-KEYSTONE, in addition to multiple R&D activities for space instruments, airborne demonstrators, and relevant technologies.

Nilo's role at the workshop will be to listen to the conversations and pull out overall themes that are emerging and add some observations from his work with ESA which may be valuable in our development of the ideas in the afternoon session.

Each group will address some key questions that will help identify why this question is so important, what the next steps might be and who should be involved in further discussions.

The information from each group will be uploaded at the end of the workshop and form part of our roadmapping report

As a lecturer at Exeter University Garry Lester carried out research into electronic instrumentation and liquid crystal devices. More recently he has been involved in developing electronic instrumentation for applications including aerospace. He has contributed a chapter on the future of photonics and LCDs to the upcoming text, 'New Waves in Electromagnetic Technology'.

What is the role of AI in this?

Understanding of customers - this is science driven but we need the path to be very clear and need to put effort into convincing other entities to work in this area. Institutional and commercial markets - what are the other needs (don’t need to wait for the end of the missions to take advantage and find other applications).

How to handle / share / manage the data? Who is the owner? Is data generated for the purpose requested? 

Intermediate opportunities (flight, demonstrators). 

Funding - can be complex and research groups need an easier starting point / entry route to ESA projects. How to attract commercial investments. Can we have missions to demonstrate certain technologies, so benefits are clear?

Need TRL high enough to convince people the mission is feasible within 10 years. Not just about going for the hype.
