I don't think Y1-3 students should be doing much homework. However, I do think primary students should be reading regularly from Year 1. I like maths number practice too. Personally, I think our school gives too much homework to primary students. Students should lead a balanced life and most of ours do not.

I do think that reading is a must for everyday homework and going over sight words are equally important. Number work on a daily basis should be done. I would suggest homework should not be over 1 hour a day.

In general, I don't think Primary students should have very much homework at all. I believe they benefit from reading every day, to someone and answering questions about what they have read. I think other homework should be limited to work that builds their confidence, like multiplication tables as this pays off so much in their class maths work. Other than that, I think the occasional project or poster is very enjoyable for students in primary. They love to bring it to school and share what they have done.
I think as a Primary section, we should possibly get together and discuss a progression from Year 1 -6, that builds homework expectations slowly an in increments. Obviously, students need to have experience in managing due dates and daily work fully, by the time they go to secondary school.

In year 6, because of the homework policy at our school, I have come to use the English homework to focus the students keenly on their writing targets and they write sentences using their spelling list words. Their sentences need to be grammatically correct and utilise the key elements for their particular writing level that they are working towards. I have found this to be helping some students. It's usually 5 or 10 sentences in a week (due on Friday) and students are encouraged to not leave these till the night before they're due, so they can really dedicate some effort to improving. My feedback is given in AFL method and shows students what to focus on next time. I don't think it's too much to expect students will be in High School next year, to do this amount of homework.

I do think that homework can have benefits for students but I definitely think that there needs to be consideration about how long it will take them, especially when considering the amount of Chinese homework too. Students should have enough time to complete the work but also have time with family and friends as well as any other after school activities. They need a school-home balance.

I think that homework for primary students is not very beneficial and can often lead to stress for tired students and parents. I think reading at home is good though this doesn't always need to be readers. Spelling lists, number and times tables and practice of skills like telling the time are valid homework . The less homework, especially for Year 1 - 3, the better!

Homework is valuable when it is focused and has purpose. Year 1 students benefit from daily reading, learning sight words and spelling. Along with practising mathematics basic facts. In general homework should not encroach too much on home life. Students need down time especially in the earlier years 1-3.

Homework can be challenging in the earlier years when caregivers do not have English skills and the students need assistance (e.g. sight words, reading etc.). There should be a dedicated ECA to help these students.

In the upper primary project based homework which is cross-curricular that relates to learning in the class can be a useful approach.
