The reasons they shied away from her was because of Zachariah, Charlotte thinks Zachariah murdered Mr. Hollybrass. They also need to protect Zachariah because their plan is only able to go through if Zachariah isn't discovered until Providence. If he is discovered before then by Jaggery, Jaggery will likely shoot him, kill him, do anything he can in his power to prevent Zachariah from going to the courts in Providence. Even Jaggery cannot win in a court if Charlotte complains to her father, I mean, her father is one man that nearly all in his branch of the company are inferior to him. But right now, in this part of the book, it's Charlotte or Zachariah that are most likely leaving mortality and are going to Heaven (or Hell). The bad thing about this is both characters are very important in the process of executing the plan out, and the crew probably trusts Zachariah more than Charlotte. The fact Charlotte will probably be hung is ominous. (*Shudders*) The trial, however, was the stupidest @$#!?>% trial in history! Not only is Charlotte innocent, Jaggery took advantage of the crew's fear and made nearly every decision in the trial! Knowing what the defendant will say to jury... knowing what to use against the jury to make it seem as though Charlotte is something she's not... Not unnatural, just because Charlotte is a female does NOT mean she is unnatural, just unusual! Jaggery, if I were in there what I would do to you.
