Jesus Christ, along with Mary and His disciples, attended a wedding in Cana, where a covenant between the bride and the groom took place. The spouses could be comparable to the Church as the bride and Jesus as the bridegroom. From here, we could see that the blessed relationship of a man and his wife is also regarded as the sacred relationship of Jesus with His people. Moreover, the miracle of the transformation of water into wine was regarded as a “confirmation of the goodness of marriage”. The jars of water used in the miracle were mainly for ceremonial washing and for purification, which was also connected to the Sacrament of Baptism. Through the holy water in Baptism, we are cleansed by God’s grace, and we become one with Him as members of the Church and as the bride of Christ. Lastly, the conversion of water into wine is a symbol of new and everlasting covenant of Jesus with the Church. In the same way, the Sacrament of Matrimony expresses the unbreakable bond of love between the spouses, which is joined together by God’s love.

In the wedding at Cana, Mary’s devotion and prayerfulness to Jesus were shown when she approached her son with confidence to address the problem that occurred in the wedding. In relation to my family, my parents always remind us to approach Jesus and to pray to Him everyday no matter what the circumstances are. They encourage us to always believe in Him because His grace makes everything possible. Moreover, it was shown in the Gospel that Mary told the servants to follow what Jesus commands them to do. These words are also directed to us. My family and I always remember to put Jesus at the center of our lives. We are taught by our parents to live by His words and follow His footsteps. Lastly, we are inspired to live a life that is full of love and service to our fellowmen because our home itself is reflected by Jesus’ pure and eternal love.

Mary and His son, Jesus Christ together with the disciples, attended the wedding feast at Cana. In this event, Jesus Christ performed his first public ministry, which is turning the water into wine. Mary was the first one to notice that there’s not enough wine for everyone. She was one of the first to realize that the newly married couple had stretched themselves too thin and that they would soon run out of wine. Mary asked Jesus to perform miracle but He said that it is not His time yet. The wine can symbolize happiness, love and plenty and by turning the water into wine, Jesus filled the couples with these graces. As the Sacrament of Matrimony is being received by couples, they are showered with joy and love which enables them to create a strong relationship with each other and receive Christ fully in their lives. The presence of Jesus at the wedding is significant as it proved that God is with us as we receive each sacraments. 

The public ministry of Christ only showed that He makes impossible things possible. His miracles proved that by having faith in Him, there will be no impossible things. Possible things happen if we believe in Him. My parents taught us to pray to God not only if we have problems or we are facing challenges but also to pray to thank Him for all the blessings that we are continuously receiving. Also, marriage for my parents is important for it gave them graces to build a stronger and more intimate relationship with each other. Marriage for them is not only an agreement between two spouses and the law but it is also an agreement with God to fully accept Him and make Him the center of their lives. As my parents promised to love each other, they also promised to love God wholeheartedly. As my family journey with our lives, we are being guided by Him and we are able to receive His unending graces and unconditional love. 

            The Wedding at Cana is one of the most popular miracles of Jesus Christ – not only because this is His first miracle but also because of its symbolism of good news and hope, that there is indeed nothing impossible with Him. Additionally, it points out to numerous analogies to the sacrament of marriage we have today. Personally, these are what I thought: first, the celebration. The sacrament of marriage is mostly known to the Filipinos as something worthy of commemoration. This explains the reception being hosted by the couple after the ceremony. The wedding at Cana justifies that, as the miracle happened at the very feast. Second is that the person we are yet to marry is favored by God. This is how I see why child Jesus agreed to perform His first miracle during this time – to show His joy, His approval and His grace. And lastly, the sacrament of marriage is both a blessing and a fresh journey. The turning of water to wine is depicted as the transformation from the bachelor life to the life with the one we love – as water is tasteless and wine is sweet. Also, this phenomena figures a fresh journey as the making of wine is an arduous process that requires time and patience. Altogether, the significance of the wedding at Cana to the sacrament of marriage we have now is the testimony that ever since the early days, the Lord already assigns someone whom we’ll experience great pains and greater love with. 

 

IMPLICATION TO MY FAMILY:

            As aforementioned, the wedding at Cana is the first of the many miracles Jesus Christ does for us. One of these miracles is my family. It has always been a marvel to me how we’re all here, at this very place, at this very hour. The event just proves how powerful He is and how vulnerable He is to the people He loves – just as He agreed to Mary to turn the water into wine, He knows what’s best for us even before we could ever ask. For its implication to my family, of course it directly applies to my parents who were already wed two years before I was born. Just like in the miracle, I know that Jesus Christ has been there for my family even before I belonged to it. He is the foundation, the center, the light, the provider, the heart of my family. What He has done to the wedding, He continues to do for me and my kin: As He turned water into wine, He turns our sorrows into joys. As He turned water into wine, He turns our problems into challenges that only mean to test our faith rather than to destroy. As He turned water into wine, He turns pain back into the love that caused it. Jesus Christ will always be the one Who takes the wheel of the bus my family drives and with that belief, we are ever safe in Him.
