Welles Crowther, or the man in the red bandana, was a hero to many on 9/11/2001. When a plane crashed into the South Tower, people on the 78th floor had no hope of surviving the attack, but Welles Crowther came to show them a safe way down to exit the building. It was said he went back to the upper floors 3 times before the building finally collapsed. Welles Crowther was always carried a red handkerchief with him since he was a boy. He had served as a volunteer firefighter as well. This hero, who died saving lives, will be forever remembered for his actions and help on this tragic day.

The work of art “Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on that September Morning” is installed as apart of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in NYC. It is composed of 2,983 individual watercolor paper squares, each a slightly different shade of blue. This number corresponds to the number of people killed in the attacks. The multitude of distinct shades also represents the unusually clear, bright blue sky (that contrasted with the tragedy that unfolded) on the morning of September 11, 2001— which is remembered/recalled individually. In the middle, a famous quote from the Roman poet Virgil's Aeneid is featured: "No day shall erase you from the memory of time".

The “Blue Wall” remembrance memorial of the September 11th is a recognizable installation which is a tribute to the 9/11 attacks and the loved ones that were lost in this tragic event. The 2,983 watercolor squares that make up the wall represent the attack victims. This structure, also called, “ Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning”, is a memory through artistic expression. Behind the wall, is a private facility where medical examiners are actively trying to identify the remains of the unidentified victims and return the remains back to their family members and loved ones. This tribute inside of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a symbol of remembrance and honoring those who lost their lives during this tragedy.

Stanley Praimnath was an Assistant Vice President for Fuji Bank who was working on the 81st floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He was about his day until relatives called him to ask if he was okay, unaware that a massive Boeing 767-223ER(N334AA), operating as American Airlines Flight 11, had flown into the North Tower, until he looked outside. He tried to call his supervisors, and made the decision to evacuate the Building. However, he didn’t get very far, as once he got to the 78th floor Sky Lobby, he was told to go back up as the building was secure. However, when he got back up, he saw a massive Boeing 767-222(N612UA), operating as United Airlines flight 175, heading straight towards him. He made the decision to duck behind his desk, as the plane crashed into the building, and survived. However, everything was destroyed around him. Walls, desks, except for one wall. That led to survival as someone came to rescue him. He punched the drywall to be rescued by Brian Clark, and was able to go home, reuniting with his family, and never going back inside those towers ever again.

Orio J. Palmer was a firefighter who saved many people from elevators during the 9/11 attack on the south tower. He climbed 37 flights with 50 pounds of gear up to the 76th floor. He had been radioing from the 76th floor back to the firefighters outside. He radioed different obstacles he had seen in the building. Some of these things include isolated pockets of fire, he identified multiple remains of people, and he also described a potential escape route in the stairwell. His calm comments about the conditions in the towers gave insight to the people as to what was the inside looking like. Unfortunately he had passed away and he died and great American hero.

The man in the red bandana was 24-year-old Welles Crowther. He had a red bandana covering his nose and mouth while he was leading people out of the South Tower. Welles Crowther made three trips back and forth to the sky lobby, saving as many people as he could until the building had collapsed. He guided people to the stairwells, carried the injured and helped put out fires, and he had saved almost a dozen lives that day. His bravery and heroism on 9/11 will never forgotten. His last words were a voicemail to his mother saying, “Mom, this is Welles. I just wanted to let you know I’m OK.” His red bandana is displayed in the Museum and his sister made a book dedicated to him called, “The Man in The Red Bandana.” His story continues to inspire others as he helped save many lives that day.

Robert O’Neill was an American controversy apart of SEAL Team 6 and was the individual who shot and killed Osama Bin Laden in 2011. O’Neill was born on April 10, 1976 in Montana. He graduated in 1994 and went to Montana Technological University. In 2004, he got married, until they split in 2013. Robert O’Neill had enlisted in the United States Navy in 1996 and became a Navy SEAL. He was apart of SEAL Team 2 from 1996 - 2001, SEAL Team 4 from 2001 - 2004, and finally SEAL Team 6 from 2004 - 2012. In May, 2011 SEAL team 6 and Operation Neptune Spear set out on a mission to find Osama Bin Laden. This was where he fired 3 fatal shots in Laden’s Hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 2, 2011. Two years later, Robert had an anonymous interview stating that he was the one who killed Osama Bin Laden, then publicly stated it later in 2014. This sparked a lot of controversy because some thought that he ruined the “privacy” and “secrecy” of military missions. To this day, Robert O’Neill is still alive with published books written by him about his life in the military and his experiences in SEAL Team 6.

The Blue Wall was created as a memorial for the 9/11 attack and to represent the clear blue sky before the attack. It holds the memory of many people whose remains weren’t found. The different shades of blue represent the individuality of the many people. There’s exactly 2983 tiles to represent each victim. Not only is this a memorial but behind the blue wall there is the Office of Chief Medical Examiner's Repository which has the unidentified human remains. Only people who have lost their family can only enter the repository. There’s still thousands of loved ones who haven’t been identified, but scientists still try and find the remains to give some shape of hope to the people who lost their loved ones.

The blue wall was created for the memorial of 9/11 and symbolized the clear, blue skies that once stood above the city just before the horrific tragedy. It carries a meaningful meaning. Not only are the tiles blue for the sky, but there are also exactly 2,983 tiles, one for each victim.

Additionally, the blue wall is not just for show. There is a huge repository located behind the wall where 1,000 body remains are located. These remains are closely being studied by scientists to try and find DNA by a speck of dust, in hopes of giving the family peace of mind. This repository is not a public place however, family members of lost ones who were never found are allowed to visit.

This quote, “No Day Shall Erase You From The Memory Of Time” is an extremely impactful phrase that honored those who died.

The Blue Wall is a memorial in the 9/11 Museum and it has 2,983 blue tiles to represent the victims of the terrorist attacks from 1993 and 2001. The quote on the wall says, “No Day Shall Erase You From the Memory of Time”, which was written by Roman poet, Virgil. The quote on the wall was made from metal that was recovered from the Twin Towers and it’s significant because it shows that this day will never be forgotten nor the people who passed away that day. The actual name of the art is called, “Trying to Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning”. This relates to all of us because we remember this memory of a perfect blue sky before the terroristic attacks happened

Todd Beamer was an American passenger on the United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked and crashed. His last words to the flight operator was, “Are you guys ready? Okay, let’s roll.” before attempting, along with other passengers, to go to the cockpit and retake the plane from the hijackers. Although he lost his life, he made sure to prevent the airplane from heading to wherever it was headed toward. His final call was to tell the operator to tell his family that he loved them and to restate the Lord’s Prayer with him before he passed. Her wife, Lisa Beamer, is alive, raising her 3 children and continues her work as a writer and speaker on the idea of faith and courage. This action was known as a symbol of bravery and resilience, killing everyone on the flight while saving the lives of all the people who could’ve been victims of the attack.

Todd Beamer was a passenger on flight 93 which was one of the hijacked planes during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He died on the plane but his heroic acts will never be forgotten. Todd was getting on a plane from Newark to San Francisco for a meeting but the plane he was on got hijacked and rerouted the course to Washington DC. Beamer and a couple other passengers and crew got into the cockpit and jumped onto the hijacker’s are regained control of the plane but something went wrong and the plane started going down. It crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania killing everyone on board. Even though no one could stop the attack completely, there would have been far more deaths if the plane made it to the capital building in Washington DC.

On September 11, 2001, Genelle Guzman-McMillan was working on the 64th floor of the North Tower at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. She felt the shake of the tower and she decided to heed the warning to stay where she is. Seventeen minutes after the first plane crashed into her tower, she began walking down the stairwell on foot to escape the building. As she walked down the stairs, the tower collapsed around her. She was trapped under the rubble of the North Tower for a miraculous 27 hours before she was found and rescued. Her right leg was crushed, her head was lodged between two concrete pillars, and her face was burned. She was the last person saved from the World Trade Center, and believes that a guardian angel named Paul had kept her alive. She remained in the hospital for one month, undergoing four surgeries.

Everyone initially thought it was an accident but afterward they realized it was an attack. Bush kept his calm composure in front of the children and left the school. He comforted a grieving and frightened country. He also declared war on terror though it was an unsuccessful war. As a president, he did a great job of keeping the country in a a state of calm during such a terrifying time.

Rick Rescorla was a past police officer, military officer, and soldier who was very active in the British military and United States Army, as he was a strong leader that set out his passion to fight for a certain reform & cause. As Rick Rescorla was not at the age of fighting in the military, at the age of 62 years, he worked in corporate security for Morgan Stanley and then became the Director of Security at the World Trade Center. From the beginning, he was concerned that the Twin Towers were a potential target for a terrorist attack, and was forcing on the need of having safety drills in the case of an emergency. On the day of 9/11/2001, Rick Rescorla was working on the 44th floor of the World Trade Center South Tower 1, and had sprung into action when the first plane hit the North Tower, regardless of the instructions over the P.A. Speaker telling everyone to be calm. He had helped direct 2,700 co-workers up and down twenty two floors to save their lives, as he had survived a similar terrorist attacking twenty years before, in the same building. He had saved a lot of lives that day by comforting Morgan Stanley’s employees and taking them to safety before the second plane had hit the South Towers, but could not save his own, as he was last seen going up the tenth floor trying to save more lives.

Her family had little hope of identifying a slight piece of her, only an ATM card from the rubble. Her son had been told 2 decades ago that expecting any DNA from her was near impossible.

Around three years ago, the NYC’s medical examiner contacted the family, notifying them that a hairbrush had seemed to belong to her. DNA samples were sent in, and they were given a positive confirmation.

Ryan Fitzgerald:

A man that worked as a forge in currency trade at the FTCI. His remains from DNA were found in the recent years. The medical examiner's office has been working for the past 2 decades to help find so many more people who have not been identified in the crash, everyday, progress is always being made, every year, the family’s of the victims of the 9/11 pray heavily to find even a little evidence, proving their existence.

Rick Rescorla was the head of security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower. He had predicted an attack on the World Trade Center and had made an evacuation plan. He had actually created a plan to evacuate the banks employees (2700 people) many years before the attack had even happened. Rick also put in regular evacuation, and despite the instructions he was given, he told his employees to evacuate the building when the North Tower was hit. He safely evacuated nearly those 2700 lives from the World Trade Center. Rick Rescorla was last seen on the 10th floor continuing to save lives and wasn’t seen after that. But his last phone call was recorded and he said, “Stop crying. I have to get these people out safely. If something happens to me, I want you to know, I’ve never been happier.
Christine Lee Hanson

Christine Lee Hanson, at two years old, was the youngest of the eight children killed on 9/11. She was flying to California for a Disneyland vacation with her parents. Christine and her parents initially were supposed to fly out on September 10th, but their flight was moved due to a conflict Peter, Christine’s dad, had with his job as a vice president of sales for a software company. Christine Lee Hanson was born in Groton, Massachusetts. She loved to help her father gardening, and she would water plants and trees saying she was “feeding” them. Eunice and Lee, the little girl’s grandparents, were very close with Christine. They were going to see their granddaughter shortly after the trip to Disney, at a friend’s wedding, for which Eunice couldn’t wait. She was excited for her granddaughter to show off her signature dance move, which Christine called her “happy dance.” Christine’s grandmother, Eunice Stylos Hanson, spoke about Christine to NBC News. “She bubbled. She was so kind,” she told, as she thought about the time Christine brought her a Band-Aid when Eunice was recovering from her foot surgery, thinking it would help. “If she did get into mischief, she found a way to make them laugh.”

Christine had many toys, however, out of all of them, she favored her beloved stuffed Peter Rabbit from Beatrix Potter’s series. This stuffed animal was a gift from her grandmother, celebrating Christine’s birth in the Chinese Year of The Rabbit. Eunice also explained that Christine loved to put stickers onto the things she liked, hence the two Winnie the Pooh stickers on the torso of her new favorite toy. This stuffed animal now sits in the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, along with a photograph of Christine Lee Hanson celebrating her first birthday. As time went on after the attack, her grandparents thought of her missed milestones: her first day of school, graduating from middle and high school, and they thought about things like what college she would go to, what job she would go on to have. Eunice wondered if she would have followed either of her parents’ footsteps, Christine’s mom having studied microbiology and her dad being involved in sales. Even after two decades, Eunice claims her grief hasn’t lessened, and everyday is a constant reminder of what and who she has lost. “She was just a special little child,” said Eunice. Today, Christine Lee Hanson would be 26 years old, and would have been her same joyful self, had she not fallen to the tragedy of that day.
