Simple past refers to a one-time action that started and ended in the past which means that the action is already completely finished and the past continuous expresses a past action that had a definite duration without indicating whether it is finished or not. 

The two times can be combined with the objective of describing a situation of the past.

 ex 
I was taking photos of the city when the camera broke.
He cooked the dinner while i was sleeping

In general, they told me about a lot of interesting things and we were agreed with some of those things, for example, the 5 of us has missed oportunities thanks to bad decisions, shyness, or fear of being alone. 
Also we try to make a difference in different ways, like Ann and I who try to stop eating foods that come from animals or for example Gustavo who tries to improve his consumption style or Leo who helps in a children's foundation.

This year I was going to graduate from the University but I don´t have all the documents yet, so the grade will be the next year.
