Women did not have many rights before the 1960's. They led many movements to help support getting basic rights like voting. Many women pushed for basic rights because they did the same thing a man could do and sometimes better while getting paid less than a man would get paid. The civil rights act of 1964 intended to bar discrimination against race, color, ethnicity, creed, and national origin. Women wanted it to include sex as well, so that they could not be discriminated against in the work place. Women have been in the place of a "house wife" for many years and after more women started getting jobs they wanted equal rights along with equal pay.

The women's movement did not have a very successful start. It was very slow at first and many people did not agree with it being mainly white men. Women who did protest for their rights were either thrown in jail or scared to the point where they would give up on the movement. When women got the right to vote everything changed for them. They started protesting for more things to be created equal along side men. Now women and men are still not equal, women still get paid 20% less than men do. We have come a long way as women in the world but women are not done fighting for what is theirs.
