How the animation will transition from live action to 2D animation. Animation sequence having the purpose to bring audience into the subconscious of Minh, the dreamscape like daydream. Of how close something simple can bring emotional value. I remember my dad recounting a story from his childhood back in Vietnam, and the way he described the story was so visually compelling, I was just playing it in my head like a movie. I think that’s why I wanted to include that in. It can also add to the surrealism, especially for Minh.

The idea of a really slow fade between two images takes the viewer out of idle watching and makes them proactive to realise why these shots were put together. It adds to the surrealism, gives more meaning to the ambiguity of the film and it also plays on the mother and what happens to her in the end.

one of my favourite film composers. His authorship is consistent. it's fresh. somehow it hits on emotional levels but is also so relevant. His score in both Kajillionaire and Minari uses classical in whimsical ways

but I think one of the best influences for the shadow play is the classic childhood books “ispy”.

In the scene, (second half of the film), he goes through this shadow play that becomes this liminal space of confrontation. We can use the idea of childhood vulnerability and nostalgia of the “ispy” books to turn it into something eerie and suspenseful. I really love this concept, and it would make that scene so much more effective.

Reading how these shots are made, (even though it’s just a children’s book), is so magical and dreamy. That they use actual props to set it up and photograph it, even though it looks photoshopped / digitised.
