Students spend time researching questions -things they “want to know” about a topic. As they find information about their questions, they record their findings. After gathering information, students use the “Summary” row as a place to write what they learned about each question while researching. Students resolve competing ideas discovered during their research or develop new questions to explore based on any missing or conflicting information. Once students’ I-Charts are complete, they can be used to help organize their writing for an informational essay on the topic.

Assaf, L.C., Ash, G.E., Saunders, J.

The Inquiry Cycle is an instructional tool that structures student reflection and the feedback provided by teachers so that students can successfully move through inquiry as a process. The parts of the Inquiry Cycle fit together like puzzle pieces - Tuning In, Finding Out, Sorting Out, Going Further, Making Conclusions, Taking Action. The key questions serve to prompt students to reflect on their learning.

Gordon, C.A., (2012) “Thinking Through the Inquiry Cycle for Young Learners”, Synergy,
