┊the firstborn of na seonghwa and lee yoona, there was always some level of expectation to be a "good son" that were on dongwoo's shoulders. it was the proper thing to do in south korea, and dongwoo understood that at an early age. thankfully, he was lucky enough to be born into a more artistic family and actually liked a field of the arts: music. his family, especially his mother, noticed this love for song whenever dongwoo would pull his parents aside at home so he could sing for them. his words were mispronounced and he was struggling to hit some notes as a toddler, but they happily supported him and let his talent blossom.

┊he is still grieving, though it is not as obvious anymore. knowing what he could have done, he still has guilt for even feeling serious joy. in recent years, he has opened himself up to happiness a little more. he's unsure if he can give his heart away romantically, to him it was an insult to his deceased wife. many times dongwoo had argued with his former in-laws, jihan's parents, when they asked him to go into the dating pool. "it was what she would have wanted. she wants you to be happy." he resisted.

┊aside from his repressed dating life, dongwoo doesn't want anyone to feel as much pain as he did, and isn't sure how to move on anyways. all of this is stirring inside him, while hyper-caring of everyone he loves, pushing his feelings aside to support his brother and his friends.

┊during their first year of high school, they were assigned to sit next to each other. they didn't know much of the other during middle school, but they had gotten closer always sitting next to each other. both came from different backgrounds, taeyang being wealthier and in a political family and dongwoo being from a middle-class artistic family, but they got along well from their shared love of animals and the sunshine-like silly energy that only grew when their two braincells bounced off the other. taeyang also tutored dongwoo when the latter was struggling with english class.

┊dongwoo believed he was going to be happy forever, a simple thought one typically has as a child. being the first son, he thought he was going to be an only child forever. yet he never thought he would be overjoyed at the idea of a little brother, a new playmate he can hang around with! and so this year, his younger brother na dongmin was born, but he was not what dongwoo expected.

┊his "picture perfect" family was never perfect from the start. he had no clue that his father had gotten into a dangerously high amount of debt and that her mother's pregnancy wasn't meant to end so early. dongmin was born and soon after, he was noted as being on the spectrum. six year old dongwoo had no idea what that meant, but he assumed he would need to protect his baby brother for the rest of his life!

┊growing up, even with his brother not fully or properly communicating his feelings to other children, dongwoo took it upon himself to be his caretaker and defender against his bullies. has naturally caring side went on overdrive for dongmin. in the back of his head, he always wondered why his mother would pay attention to dongmin more, so he had decided to mirror her in hopes of getting the rest of her love as well.

┊with his parents realizing that a normal school would be difficult for dongmin socially, both brothers enter college. dongwoo would be 18 and fresh from high school, and unsurprisingly 12-year-old dongmin meets the academic and test requirements to enter the same college. in the first year or so, they have overlapping classes since the first three semesters consist of more general subjects.

┊in one korean history class, dongwoo meets his future wife, seol jihan. the two of them become fast friends quickly, being in the same music program and having this one class together. dongmin, barely a teenager, is one of the catalysts for dongwoo and jihan's relationship. without realizing there would be social consequences, he mentioned that dongwoo had kept note of all of jihan's favourite foods, colors, movies, and things she wanted to buy from when she and dongwoo would hang out. at that point dongwoo had no choice but to admit he had romantic feelings for her.

"you know my brother actually remembers everything about you? he knows your favourite foods, all the stuff you mentioned wanting to buy, even the colors of pen you like to use during class. i don't know why he can recall all that and suck at this history class." dongmin spoke nonchalantly, sitting beside jihan while dongwoo was talking to the professor. her eyes widened and she started giggling, her cheeks turning rosy.

"he really remembers all that about me?" she whispered, looking at dongwoo's head from behind. she immediately looked away when the older na was heading back from the professor's table.

"yeah. what an idiot, he should use his brains for something more important, like school." dongmin tsks, looking down at his notes, all neat and organized. "dummy saying he loves you or something in his diary. weirdo." dongwoo comes back, unaware of how much information was revealed.

"hello!" jihan greeted him, relief painting her face.

"hello!" he mirrored her like he usually did. "did dongmin insult my intelligence again while i was gone?" jihan nods and after the class she asks dongwoo out and teases him about having a diary.

their romantic relationship with each other was typical of college students, but one could agree their opinions of each other were overwhelmingly positive and they were deeply in love. it was lucky that they were under the same music program, allowing them to constantly see each other. there was nothing holding them back from marriage in the future as well since dongwoo's mother loved jihan like she was already her daughter-in-law.

┊growing up, dongwoo realized that he was what was known as a "glass child." he was a child that was ignored or seen as invisible by one or both parents when a sibling has a disability. that never deterred him from his parents or caused him to resent dongmin, because he understood how tough it was for his brother growing up. he rarely had that problem, ageing into a handsome young man with good social and communication skills.

┊it was this year. this was the year his mother died from a freak fire accident, away from her family and at work. only in this year when his mother died did dongwoo realise that as the older sibling being "looked through like glass," he desperately wanted her love too. he wanted her to dote on him like she did to dongmin, but there was no chance of that happening now. his father was barely emotionally present the same way she was (while alive) due to his schedule. it turns out there was a reason dongwoo enjoyed the love he actively found for himself, one of them being jihan. she was a constant source of love for him and she a receiver of his.

┊the loss of his mother was still a deep and serious blow, especially since she vouched for dongwoo's musical talent while his father, while not disapproving completely, was hesitant on it. his father wanted the oldest son to help with the remaining family debt and take up something more financially secure while pushing aside his son's obvious talent in singing.

┊his father fell into bad drinking habit after his wife died, and dongwoo being (legally and emotionally) an adult at that point, took more responsibility in the family and over his brother. to this day, his relationship with his father is strained because of the two brothers being neglected. later on, he understood the weight of a spouse's death the hard way.

┊his mother had passed away two years earlier, but dongwoo had refused to let it get him down. after all, he still had his girlfriend jihan and brother dongmin to support him through his grieving process. dongmin seemed to not be as affected as dongwoo was at their mother's death, but knowing how his brother was, he just accepted it as typical. dongwoo barely relied on his father for guidance at this point and he was alright with that.

┊he graduated this year with a degree in music. he and jihan had the rest of their life together planned down to the quarters of the year. according to said plan, dongwoo followed through and immediately enlisted in the military later in the year. once he finished enlistment, they would continue their plans to have semi-regular jobs and music careers being their aim.

┊another step in the famous plan, the two of them had conceived their first child during one of jihan's december visits to dongwoo in the military. they were aware that they weren't married yet, and so were her parents. it was an unconventional choice, but being silly 21-year-olds, they were too excited to be parents, have their own house and children, even if it wasn't in the usual order.

┊the december-conceived baby was born october 1st this year, a healthy baby girl named her na yumi. dongwoo's future in-laws felt it strange that the two would actively want a child before marriage, but knowing how responsible dongwoo was as well as their general trust in their daughter, they couldn't really say no. the young couple was blessed with at least one pair of grandparents, as jihan's parents helped her get through the pregnancy with ease, with dongwoo returning from enlistment 2 months before yumi's birth.

┊both of them being fresh graduates with specialties in the arts, they realized it was difficult keeping down a high-paying job, or any job at all. jihan carried on with her parents' small business, a snack bar. after some reflection, dongwoo decides to begin firefighter training. it was done in honor of his mother, aside from him being physically and mentally qualified for it. their joint-income would be more than enough to sustain them while giving both time with their firstborn and the planned future second child.

┊dongwoo and jihan's second child is born in june. it's a boy and they named him na dongju.

┊his position in the gohyang fire department is still at rookie-level, but his superiors have grown to trust him, with his passion for protection and safety. it was an internal spark dongwoo had always had, but never realised could be used this way. it definitely helped that he was one of the more playful and disarming firemen at this time. a handful of older aunties in gohyang sighed in disappointment when they found out the 24-year-old firefighting rookie was happily married.

┊the two had been so busy caring for their newborn daughter yumi that they delayed their wedding for 6 months, having it this year. it was nothing extravagant. in fact, they preferred a smaller crowd and just a dinner with the families (her parents, dongmin and his father) and some very close friends. all they wanted was their love and commitment on paper. the spectacle was never something they wanted, that would be their plan for their 10th wedding anniversary where they would renew their vows. despite the small and delayed nuptials, dongwoo thought of jihan as his beautiful bride, as pretty down the aisle as the day he met her in class. the two married in april.

┊so far their plans had not really gone off the rails and there were little setbacks aside from their dreams being put on hold. they conceived their second child in september of this year. jihan's parents were relieved to say the least that at least the two were going to be married for the birth of the second child. dongwoo's father had little to say, since they rarely communicated at this time.

┊after less than a year of rigorous firefighter training, dongwoo gets his proper certification and becomes a firefighter. naturally, his school assigned him to his own hometown gohyang, dongwoo rarely objecting since there weren't many firefighters up in north gyeongsang.

┊dongwoo's wife and children died in an accidental museum fire in seoul while dongwoo was away from the building. he was tasked by his wife to grab something at the hotel during this spontaneous summer family trip. seol jihan, died at 28 years old, his children, na yumi and na dongju, died at 6 and 4 years old, respectively.

┊the widower, barely able to escape the dark clutches of grief and guilt that plagued him, fell into alcohol dependence within weeks. he despised himself for not being able to enter the burning building when he went back to the museum. the seoul fire department held him back with everything they had, knowing if he ran in with no safety gear that he would die as well. it was out of dongwoo's job scope and he was not high enough in the chain of command to tell them what to do.

┊the freak accident fire ended with 32 injured and 14 killed, 3 of the 14 were his wife and 2 children. it happened in june of 2018, the families of the victims were compensated very little.

┊dongwoo, still forcing himself to go to work with very little internal purpose, gets diagnosed with ptsd and depression, exacerbated by his now-present drinking habit. nobody expected the once playful and caring na brother to be a near-identical mirror of his father, but they understood why. it pained his father, who was by this time a bit more sober, to see his son go through hell like he did.

┊both families, the seols and the na patriarch, attempted to start an intervention for dongwoo. their final straw was when he was admitted alcohol poisoning one month before the first year anniversary of his family's death. the family of dongwoo and jihan, as well as his co-workers at the fire station, pitch in to send him to a rehabilitation center for 3 months. the rehabilitation clinic allowed him a week of freedom to visit his wife and children at gohyang cemetery.

┊with a harsh but eye-opening grief and alcoholism recovery program behind him, dongwoo's passion for living slowly returned. he finished the 3-month program in august of this year. the next few years he would work with almost the same passion he had as a rookie, earning him favour with his superiors and colleagues within the department. he had been aiming for the second-highest position there: the fire captain.

┊he gets promoted to his current position as the fire captain of the gohyang fire department. it was the greatest honour he could have and he had no plans of becoming the fire chief any time soon. while also respecting the current chief, dongwoo knew that the fire captain had the most say when firefighters were on the field, while also handling administrative tasks. on paper, he's second-in-command, but he had the most power in terms of scope. he refused to let anyone he cared about get hurt because of not being in a position of power.

┊dongwoo wanted to be a person who would have let his younger self wear safety gear and run into that burning building years ago. it was too late for himself now, but at least he could be that person for everyone else.

┊he still visits his family at the cemetery and sings to them. majority of the songs are ones he and his wife composed together through the years. he is still at the second-highest position in the gohyang fire department as captain, until present day.

┊this year would be the 6th year after jihan, yumi, and dongju's passing. dongwoo, while as caring as he always was, had remained single since his wife's death (much to everyone's disappointment).

┊she used to be the owner of her family's small snack bar business, was supportive of dongwoo's decisions and shared his love for music during their time together. she loved him so much and he misses her still. she died at 28.

┊he died in the fire with his mother and sister in 2018, at 4 years old. he reminded his father of dongmin, endlessly curious and always asking questions.

┊the two had a loving relationship but they were not very close while dongwoo was growing up, since both parents were more focused on his brother's wellbeing. they were fine until seonghwa's wife passed, and he neglected dongwoo more and turned to alcohol. dongwoo resented his father for this until he experienced the same thing.

┊their current relationship is a vast improvement, being much more positive and open since his father was the one who initiated the intervention and dongwoo's recovery in the rehab clinic. he paid for dongwoo's hospital fees for when he had alcohol poisoning, without asking for a thank you.

┊she was a retired art collector, she died when dongwoo was 19.

┊he loved her deeply and only realized later in his teens that while she loved the na brothers equally, she paid less attention to dongwoo because he was responsible and self-sufficient. he can't blame her for her actions, since dongmin needed more guidance and she also vouched for dongwoo's music education when applying for colleges. he misses her.

   ⤷ dongwoo actually got dongmin his first pet, a dog. since he found out later that his brother had a very specific and passionate interest in sea life, crabs mostly. knowing this, he bought a small crab outfit for the dog!

   ⤷ ever since becoming sober after the brief (and dangerous) period of alcohol dependence, dongwoo has been complimented by his co-workers and friends as being the best designated driver, especially the men being in awe of how many he can hold/carry/drag at once (2-3 at a time).

   ⤷ dongwoo had a few childhood dreams that he put aside once he discovered his true passion for music, and later on firefighting. some of them include being a stunt man for action movies, an astronaut, a giraffe (he was very young when picking this one) and being a nurse.

   ⤷ he enjoys telling the story of his birth, relayed to him by his parents. they liked that he was born on a 'neat' date, january 10, 1990 at exactly 12:00pm noon. early in his teens, dongwoo's online passwords included the code for his birth: 90011012, 90 for 1990, 01 for january, 10 for the 10th day and 12 for noon. it was very dangerous because they were all quickly guessable but he was a teenager.

   ⤷ by present day, dongwoo had given many of jihan's belongings like clothes and books to her relatives and friends. he kept a few of her sentimental items like her favourite books and clothes he bought for her all in a closet that stays locked. his kids' birth certificates, his past marriage certificate, and other documents are kept in a safe inside the closet. his children's clothes were mostly given to jihan's parents, but dongwoo kept their toys, books, and the few drawings they made. in the end, he decided to keep very little of them.
