Reacting for the first time after winning a historic gold medal in men's javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics, India's Neeraj Chopra said 'it feels unbelievable.' Chopra's gold medal on Saturday was special in more ways than one. The satellite will be launched on August 12 at 5.43am from Sriharikota.
The pandemic delayed the launch of the new-series geo-satellite, which has civilian and strategic importance, several times since last year. Isro’s GSLV-F10 rocket will finally put the 2,268-kg Gisat-1, codenamed EOS-3, into the geo-orbit. This will be India’s first launch of a primary satellite this year.

DENVER, US: When the delta variant started spreading, Gina Welch decided not to take any chances: She got a third, booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine by going to a clinic and telling them it was her first shot.
The US government has not approved booster shots against the virus, saying it has yet to see evidence they are necessary. But Welch and an untold number of other Americans have managed to get them by taking advantage of the nation's vaccine surplus and loose tracking of those who have been fully vaccinated.
Welch, a graduate student from Maine who is studying chemical engineering, said she has kept tabs on scientific studies about Covid-19 and follows several virologists and epidemiologists on social media who have advocated for boosters.

Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, over one lakh students of classes 10 and 12 have signed petitions urging the government to either cancel board exams scheduled to be held in May or conduct them in online mode. The hashtag "cancelboardexams2021" has been trending on Twitter for the past two days. However, both the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) have said that adequate safety arrangements are being made for students and all COVID-19 guidelines will be followed during the exams.AdvertisingAdvertising"The situation in India is getting worse day by day. When there were only a few cases in the country, they cancelled the remaining board exams and now when the cases are at a peak they are planning to open schools. We urge the education minister to look into this matter and cancel all examinations to be held this year as students are already under a lot of stress," a petition on Change.org said.Divya Garg, a class 10 student, on Twitter urged the government to postpone the exams for at least a month and then take a further review based on the number of cases."The students have already faced a lot of problems till now in this pandemic. Classes were held online so the exams should also be held online or students should be promoted via internal assessment marks," another user tweeted.Usually, practical exams are conducted in January and written exams begin in February and conclude in March. However, the exams were delayed and are scheduled to be held in May-June in view of the pandemic."Adequate arrangements are being made to ensure the students are safe and all COVID protocols are followed. The number of exam centres has been increased by 40-50 per cent to ensure social distancing. The staff at exam centres is being sensitised to ensure all guidelines are followed," a senior CBSE official said. The board had last week announced that if any student fails to appear for ongoing practical exams after the student or any family member testing positive, the schools will conduct re-tests for them at an appropriate time. The official, however, did not comment on whether the same relaxation will be given to students in theory exams as well.Similarly, Gerry Arathoon, the chief executive and secretary at CISCE, said the schedule for exams "will remain the same".Schools across the country were closed in March last year to contain the spread of COVID-19 ahead of a nationwide lockdown.Several states started reopening the schools partially from October last year, but physical classes are again being suspended in view of the exponential rise in coronavirus cases.Last year, the board exams had to be postponed mid-way in March. They were later cancelled and the results were announced on the basis of an alternative assessment scheme. Both the CBSE and CISCE had decided not to come up with a merit list last year.India registered a record single-day spike of 1,26,789 new COVID-19 cases, pushing its infection tally to 1,29,28,574, while the number of active cases too went upwards to breach the nine lakh-mark again, the Union Health Ministry's data updated on Thursday showed.

The previous best in this period was the 51st rank finish at Beijing in 2008, when India won three medals, including Abhinav Bindra's gold.
India has finished significantly higher in the era in which it used to win gold in hockey, but that time is not really comparable both because of the dozens of countries that have come into being since then and the expansion in the number of sports and hence medals. In Moscow, for instance, India finished at 23rd rank but with just a solitary medal, the hockey gold. A repeat of that at Tokyo would have placed India at joint 63rd, a measure of how different the two eras are.

In London 2012, India had finished 57th despite winning more medals than in Beijing because the medal table ranks countries by gold, silver, and bronze in that order and India didn't win a gold in London. In Rio in 2016, the medal tally crashed to just two and so did the ranking to 67th. From there, it's now gone up nearly 20 places.

Madras HC dismisses plea to print image of Netaji Subhash Bose on currency notes

MADURAI: Madras high court on Tuesday dismissed a plea which sought to print the image of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on currency notes, observing, what is the use of printing the image of great leaders who fought for our independence without following their principles. “Merely because the image of -Mahatma Gandhi is printed on currency notes, does it mean that currency is used for legal purposes,” a division bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and M Duraiswamy further noted.
Petitioner K K Ramesh who appeared as party-in-person had challenged the order passed by the finance ministry rejecting his claim to print Netaji’s image on currency notes. The judges observed that they were not underestimating the freedom struggle and sacrifice made by Netaji or other great leaders. “There are several known and unsung heroes who contributed to the freedom movement of our country. If everybody starts making such claims there would not be an end. Moreover, recent days claims and counterclaims are made on religion, community, region and race,” observed the judges.
The judges observed that the Centre and RBI had constituted a committee in 2010 for deciding on future currency notes and the question of changing the existing image of Gandhi and inclusion of images of certain other personalities. However, the committee decided after deliberations that no other personality could better represent the ethos of India than Gandhi and its report was accepted by the ministry. The judges observed that the decision of the Centre and RBI to retain the Gandhi image on currency notes could not be faulted with. It is only the government that can take such a policy decision and this court cannot substitute the view taken by the committee. Hence, the ministry’s order rejecting the petitioner’s claim cannot be said to be illegal.
LATEST FROM MADURAI
Tamil Nadu adds 1,893 cases, 27 deaths to Covid registry
Tamil Nadu adds 1,893 cases, 27 deaths to Covid registry
Preparations on to resume physical classes: TN minister
Applications open for MKU evening college
MORE NEWS
A division bench of the court had on February 4 disposed of K K Ramesh’s PIL seeking to print the name of Netaji on currency notes by directing the authorities to consider the request.

India vs England 2nd Test Day 1 Live Updates: After a short rain delay, which pushed proceedings back by 20 minutes, England captain Joe Root won the toss and opted to bowl against India. Virat Kohli informed that Ishant Sharma has replaced Shardul Thakur in India's only chance. As for England, there have been three changes with Haseeb Hameed, Moeen Ali and Mark Wood getting a game. Dan Lawrence, Zak Crawley and Stuart Broad miss out. Going into the 2nd Test at Lord's, both India and England have a fair share of injury concerns. Shardul Thakur's injury has led to India mulling whether to add an extra pacer in Ishant Sharma, or bring in R Ashwin who can bat as well. For England, Stuart Broad is already ruled out - while there are doubts regarding James Anderson as well. A Test match at Lord's could not have asked for a better story to set it up.
A. However, KL Rahul's system is the opposite," Inzamam said. In 2018, Rahul scored 149 in the fifth Test at the Oval, followed by 84 in the first innings of the Nottingham Test before notching up his second ton in England. Among other traits, what impressed Inzamam the most was Rahul's penchant to score more centuries in overseas conditions.KL Rahul's century on the opening day of the Lord's Test won him plenty of plaudits from several former cricketers, including Pakistan great Inzamam-Ul Haq, who was simply awed by India opener's innings of 129 in the first innings against England. Rahul peeled off his sixth Test century and the fifth overseas, with his century being his third consecutive 50-plus scores in Test matches in England.

Ashwathi VII C

India evacuates second batch of diplomats, officials from Afghanistan (17/08/2021)

After negotiations for over 24 hours, India has managed to evacuate the second batch of diplomats, officials and journalistsfrom Kabul using an Indian Air Force C-17 heavy-lift aircraft. The IAF aircraft flew from Hamid Karzai Airport around 8am Kabul time with the help of US forces manning the ATC. Indian ambassador to Afghanistan Rudrendra Tandon is on the flight along with 120 other diplomats and officials.

While the Modi government is tight-lipped about the entire operations, the C-17 with all the evacuees will cross into Indian air space around 11am (IST) and land at Jamnagar. The IAF aircraft, which has a passenger capacity of nearly 800, is expected to reach Delhi around 1pm. India is now waiting for US forces to allow civilian flights to Kabul for further evacuation. The first batch of Indians came on Sunday via an Air India flight.

According to sources based in Kabul, it was part of the withdrawal deal that the Turkish forces would man the HKI airport but Ankara withdrew at the very last minute leading to utter confusion. With all local staff abandoning the ATC and other positions and illiterate Taliban having no idea about manning the air traffic services, it was left to the US to take control.

It was due to the ensuing chaos that led to the death of desperate Afghans at the HKI airport as the civilians feared for their life and limb at the hands of the Taliban. It was only after this that the US decided to stop civilian flights from Kabul on Monday and decided to only allow military flights. Other Indians will be evacuated from Afghanistan after the HKI airport is opened to civilian flights.

by
E.Haripriya
from 10th A

NEW DELHI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday allowed Boeing 737 Max to fly in Indian airspace again, after carrying out the required safety modifications.
The Boeing 737 Max planes were grounded globally in March 2019 after two crashes within 5 months.
Recently, these planes were allowed to fly again by regulators of different countries as well like the US, EU and UAE -- after undergoing required hardware and software updates for safety.India had barred the Max from flying to, from, within and over Indian airspace on March 13, 2019.
Kumar’s order also gave out the basis of allowing Max to fly again in India.
It said: “Based on design changes by Boeing, (America’s) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Airworthiness Directive (AD) on November 18, 2020, mandating actions for 737 Max airplanes return to service (RTS). Concurrent with the issuance of the AD, FAA rescinded the Emergency Order of Prohibition. Subsequently, European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) also issued its own AD on February 17, 2021 which has been mandated by DGCA for compliance on Indian registered fleet.”Earlier in April, the DGCA had allowed foreign-registered Boeing 737 Max aircraft that was grounded in India to be flown out of the country. It had also allowed overflying of modified Max over Indian airspace.
Following this, some foreign registered aircraft grounded at various airports in India were able to undertake RTS.
So far, 175 out of 195 countries have lifted restrictions on Max, and over 30 operators have returned the plane to service. In a statement, Boeing said: “The DGCA’s decision is an important milestone toward safely returning the 737 MAX to service in India. Boeing continues to work with regulators and our customers to return the airplane to service worldwide.”
The DGCA said it has been closely monitoring the global trend of un-grounding of Max.
“Worldwide 17 regulators have permitted operation of Boeing 737 Max airplane. A sizeable number airlines (34) with B737 Max airplane (345) are operating currently and have attained 1,22,824 total departures with 2,89,537 cumulative hours since the un-grounding from December 9, 2020, with no untoward reporting,” the order noted.
Based on that, India has rescinded its order for grounding of Max “subject to the compliance with DGCA Mandatory Modification on Indian registered airplane and FAA AD(on) foreign registered airplane.”
Ashwathi
Vll C

New Delhi | Jagran Trending Desk: In a proud moment for the whole country, Indian researchers have discovered three supermassive black holes from as many galaxies that are merging to become a triple active galactic nucleus, said the Department of Science and Technology. A triple active galactic nucleus refers to the compact region at the centre of a newly discovered galaxy that is capable of having much higher-than-normal luminosity. As per the information provided by the Department of Science and Technology, this is a very rare occurrence that has taken place in our nearby galaxies and it specifies that small merging groups are exemplary laboratories that will help in detecting the multiple accreting supermassive black holes and increases the possibility of detecting such rare occurrences.

Gunfire was reported in the aftermath of the explosions.

Mr. Biden said he had asked his commanders to find ways to target ISIS-K, the Afghan affiliate of the Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for the attacks earlier in the day on behalf of its loyalists in Afghanistan.

He vowed the United States would respond with force at “a moment of our choosing,” echoing President Bush’s remarks days after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“This conflict was begun on the timing and terms of others; it will end in a way and at an hour of our choosing,” Mr. Bush said, weeks before the U.S. military began fighting in Afghanistan.

Mr. Biden spoke from the East Room of the White House shortly after the Pentagon confirmed the deaths of the American service members in what officials said were suicide bomber attacks.

“These American service members who gave their lives,” Mr. Biden said, were “heroes who have been engaged in a dangerous, selfless mission to save the lives of others.”

He called Thursday “a tough day” and pledged that the United States would uphold its “sacred obligation” to the families of the fallen.

The night before the attack, a senior U.S. official warned of a “specific” and “credible” threat at the airport by an affiliate of the Islamic State — the Islamic State Khorasan, or ISIS-K — and Western governments began urging people to leave the area.

Even with such a specific warning, military officials said, it would be very difficult to pick out a suicide bomber with a concealed explosive vest in a huge throng of people, like that at the airport.

The troops who died Thursday were the first American service members killed in Afghanistan since February 2020. For the U.S. military, it was a day with more deaths than any other since 2011.

Those deaths were just the kind of military loss Mr. Biden has repeatedly said he was trying to avoid by ending America’s 20-year war in the country.

Acting against the advice of his generals and overruling some of his top foreign policy advisers, Mr. Biden made the decision in April that he could not ask more American troops — or their families — to sacrifice themselves for a war that he no longer believed was in the best interests of the United States or its allies.

The president has said that he did not want to call the parents of another Marine, soldier or airman killed in action in Afghanistan.

But the rapid takeover of the country by the Taliban caught the administration off-guard and set in motion a chaotic evacuation in which 6,000 American troops attempted to secure the Kabul airport against the Taliban and terror groups. Earlier this week, Mr. Biden rejected calls from lawmakers, activists and other world leaders to extend the American presence at the airport past Aug. 31, citing the potential for terrorist attacks.

Last Friday, as he pledged to evacuate all Americans and Afghan allies who wanted to leave the country, Mr. Biden vowed that “any attack on our forces or disruption of our operations at the airport will be met with a swift and forceful response.”

It was unclear on Thursday whether a military response of any kind was already in the works, or whether the U.S. troops on the ground had the capacity to strike back while also securing the airport.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday said the role of free press in a democracy must be respected, but warned that rampant misuse of the right to free speech by mushrooming web portals and YouTube channels to circulate with impunity slander, fake news and reports deliberately slanted with communal overtones would “ultimately bring a bad name to the country”.NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday said the role of free press in a democracy must be respected, but warned that rampant misuse of the right to free speech by mushrooming web portals and YouTube channels to circulate with impunity slander, fake news and reports deliberately slanted with communal overtones would “ultimately bring a bad name to the country”.CJI N V Ramana said, “The print and television media are generally responsible and have a regulatory mechanism in place for effecting corrections. But everything shown in a section of media, especially the web-based ones, carry a communal overtone. There is no controlDuring the resumed hearing on a more than a year-old petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind complaining about circulation of fake news and biased reporting during the pandemic to vilify Tablighi Markaz, a bench of the CJI and Justices Surya Kant and A S Bopanna took the lid off its pent-up grievances against web portals and web channels allegedly indulging in irresponsible as well as motivated reporting to damage reputations and spread communal disharmony.
"There is no regulatory control over fake news and slandering by web portals and YouTube channels. They can publish anything they want without verification or paying heed to facts. If you go to YouTube, there are many channels circulating fake news. Anyone can start a YouTube channel and circulate whatever they want. There is no regulatory mechanism for these channels and portals," said the CJI, and asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta whether the Centre has put in place any regulatory mechanism against people misusing the right to free speech.
Mehta said, "The real contest is between freedom of speech and the right of citizens to get correct news and information. Through the framing of the new Information and Technology rules, we have tried to strike a balance between the media’s right to free speech and the citizens’ right to correct information. The rules mainly intend to stop circulation of fake news and hold the web portals and channels accountable for the content disseminated by them".
The SG said the new IT rules have been challenged in several high courts and requested the SC to transfer all pending petitions in HCs to itself for an authoritative ruling on the validity of the impugned rules that intend to subserve media’s right to freedom of speech and citizens’ right to authentic news.
But, the CJI had not yet finished conveying his concern over the present scenario involving the web portals and channels. "They write vituperatively against judges, institutions and whomever they dislike. And when asked to bear accountability for their reports, they never respond. They say they have a right to publish whatever they wish to. There is no control," Ramana lamented.
Mehta said there is a growing tendency among a section of web portals to tarnish the image of individuals and institutions through irresponsible reporting. "Through the new IT rules, the government intends to fasten accountability on the media and the reports they publish. We have attempted to strike a balance between freedom of speech and the right to correct news through a three-tier mechanism. First, the aggrieved person can make a complaint to concerned media; second, the media is mandated to take corrective measures or give response to the complaint within 15 days; thirdly, if no corrective measures are undertaken or the complaint remains unheeded beyond 15 days, the authorities can initiate proceedings," he said.
The SC asked the SG to ensure that the Union government filed its fresh counter-affidavit in two weeks detailing the steps taken for stopping fake news and irresponsible reporting.

Ashwathi
VII C

NEW DELHI: Iran fired the first salvo against Pakistan’s overt involvement in Afghanistan’s internal matters when it questioned reports of Pakistani military presence in the Panjshir valley, where Taliban said it has overcome resistance to its rule, on Monday. Iran became the first country to protest against the Taliban blockading the valley north of Kabul, calling for negotiations rather than military action.
"Last night's attacks are condemned in the strongest terms…and the foreign interference …. must be investigated,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh told journalists on Monday. “We are investigating it.”Though Iran has been much more welcoming of the Taliban lately, Monday’s statement indicates it may not be ready to give up its influence over the Taliban resistance either, comprising as it is of mainly of Tajiks and some other minority groups.
India has maintained silence in the past few days on the ongoing developments in Afghanistan. However, government sources maintained they were watching events closely and would judge them based on the actions on the ground.
This was also the takeaway after top-level officials from US and India met in Washington DC over the past couple of days. The US is hurting after a particularly ill-executed withdrawal from Afghanistan that has geopolitical consequences. This may result in a global distancing from the Afghan problem, with many western powers willing to leave it to Pakistan. According to senior government sources, this could mean a return to 20 years ago when Pakistan made itself a frontline state and will look to stabilise Afghanistan in a way that the ruling dispensation is better disposed towards Islamabad rather than New Delhi.
Ashwathi
VII C
