•When EMS was alerted of the incident the first thing done was put up an EMS command post just two blocks from the shooting event so that all communication between physicians is in a close quarter environment and if new information is relayed from police or fire teams, everyone will be informed with live updates.

•Most patients involved in the shooting were transported to UPMC Presbyterian which was chosen due to the most direct route from the scene. They also stated that they were prepared to accept a large number of patients.

•Concerning the gunman as he was shot and arrested, he was transported to a separate trauma center which was decided by physicians on scene to separate the assailant from the victims.

Challenges?

•Although there were no challenges faced for EMS crews, they were best prepared for MCI’s as such, as they set up a EMS command post, had appropriate resources and personnel on scene. The only thing noted that EMS had problems with were how severe the injuries were to patients. For example, a squad member who was injured on scene was shot during the attack and suffered a upper extremity injury which did not resolve with one tourniquet.

•One communication challenge that was faced was off duty medical providers wanting to offer their services to the attending hospital but the off duty providers were not sure if it was safe to respond to the hospital.

• To begin EMS established a ICP within 7 minutes of the notification of the event, in the first two minutes of the call being made. EMS also requested a Rapid Activation Team.

•Additional personnel who were off duty were present at trauma centers prepared to assist and render further aid to victims involved.
