"Filipinos' Pride and Prejudice"

Have you ever been to the Philippines? Have you ever met a Filipino? It is without a doubt that Filipinos are among the friendliest people you will come across in your life. On the contrary, prejudice is rampant in the Philippines, may it be in terms of religion, physical appearance, and gender.

Many studies have shown that some Filipinos hold negative views directed against Muslims due to alleged Islamic terrorism in the Philippines. For all the Muslims living in the country, pervasive discrimination and social inequality are grounds for their suffering. Every day, they wake up in a judgmental society where they are being judged as terrorists. The suffering of Muslims in the Philippines is inhumane. Religious discrimination has become widespread.

Aside from religious discrimination, physical features discrimination is also getting out of control. Because of colonial mentality, most Filipinos think that white-skinned people are beautiful, and dark-skinned people are not. In school, dark-skinned people are getting bullied by other students. In a workplace setup, dark-skinned employees are being treated unfairly. Filipinos often perceive dark-skinned people as dangerous and undesirable.

LGBT community is also not an exception to the prejudice of Filipinos. They have been victims of prejudice and harassment in the country. In the Philippines, students who are lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people (LGBT) often find that their school experiences are wrecked by bullying, discrimination, lack of access to LGBT-related information, and in some cases, physical or sexual assault. Certainly, these abuses can cause deep and lasting harm.

Indeed, prejudice is rampant in the Philippines. Racism, bias, and discrimination towards Muslims, dark-skinned people, and the LGBT community still exist in Philippine society. As everyone knows, discrimination is the root of human division, and it has to disappear. The Philippines, regarded as one of the friendliest nations in the world, must eliminate its prejudice against Muslims, dark-skinned people, and the LGBT community in order to achieve peace and harmony. The world is now in the 21st century. Each one of us must accept and respect everyone, regardless of the race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, economic status, and other diverse backgrounds. As Brian Tracy said, "The greatest gift that you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance."

Judging Outward Appearances Is A Worse Habit

Some people or maybe people in your country have habit to judge people from how they clothes like rormal clothes as rich and important figures, secondhand clothes as poor people, and unique styles as strange, those are how people in my country judge from how people clothes.

For some people in my country when they see person wear formal clothes is means rich or important figure. For instance, a man wear suit example of formal clothes than all people around him will judge and assume as rich man. In fact, not all people are wear suit is rich and important figure, in the part of the world there is small goup or society are wear formal clothes but they are not rich and important figure. They are can have it from having a debt or pawning them things.

Secondhand clothes for some people is dirty, cheap and only for poor people, it is worse point of view and opinion, because now secondhand clothes is like upgrade. People judge like these perhaps in the past time secondhand clothes did not manage with properly, however nowadays we can see if secondhand clothes are manage with good. Now we can see almost all teenager wear secondhand clothes or now it called as thrifting, in fact secondhand clothes have a same price like clothes are sell in department store, so we cannot judge if people are wear secondhand clothes as poor people because the clothes have a standart price.

Fashion always creates new styles, for example unique styles many people judge if people wear unique styles as weird or crazy. Men wearing skirts today are an example of a unique style , because it means that clothes are made for the public not just for men or women. In some cultures they have a traditional skirt worn by men, it was made from a long time ago meaning if we do not have a dress limit for gender.

Judging people by how they clothes in society is a bad habit in my country, because it gives an illogical impression. In my opinion in these time we must change a mindset that judges something only from the outward appearance.

Diversity from Clothes

Fashion is an inseparable part of our lives. In Indonesia, many people have started experimenting with their clothes and it creates diversity. This creates various views in society, many people are able to accept, but not a few people are still not open to this diversity. Many people judge others for wearing slightly different clothes, specifically syar’i clothes, unbranded clothes, and clothes that are not gender appropriate.

The first example of the difference in clothing is using syar'i clothes. In Indonesia, Muslim women who wear syar'i clothes are often labelled bad by some people. They label these Muslim women as terrorists. This stigma has been embedded in some Indonesian people for a long time. Because of this stigma, many Muslim women who wear syar'i clothes feel insecure and uncomfortable. Therefore, they are afraid to show themselves to society.

Another example of the difference in clothing is wearing unbranded clothes. This modern era has changed the way people think. Many people have a high prestige because of it. This makes them always judge something from the brand. No exception in terms of clothing. Therefore, many people judge others as poor just because they don't use branded clothes and don't really care about what they wear.

The last example of the difference in clothing is wearing clothes that are not gender appropriate. This era gave birth to many types of fashion. It makes people start to experiment with their clothes. This creates new fashion trends emerging. Many people use clothes that do not match their gender in following these trends. It creates a bad stigma in society, such as thinking that they are weird.

All in all, Muslim women who wear syar’i, people who wear unbranded clothes, and people who wear clothes that are not gender appropriate are often labelled as bad, poor, and weird by some people.

Modest Appearance

As we know that clothes are one of the primary needs. A lot of people prefer to use clothes that are fancy. People like this commonly come from wealthy families. In addition, they are competing to be someone who looks the most luxurious. However, there are still people who look simple. They do not care about clothes not because they do not understand fashion, but they are concerned with other things than having to be confused about clothes. Therefore judging someone by their modest appearance is not appropriate behavior.

People who have a modest appearance understand themselves better than people who always care about appearance. People who have a modest appearance mostly look happy and enjoy life more because they know what they want in their life. They know what should they do, what not they want to do, when to move on, and when to stop. Everything can be understood very well because they are able to recognize themselves.

People who have a modest appearance like to spend their money in another way than have to spend on fancy clothes. They think more about something more important like an investment because they think realistically for the future. Not infrequently they prefer to donate their money rather than having to buy luxury items for themselves.

All in all, people who have taste in modest fashion always understand themselves better and like to spend their money on a useful thing. For example, they know what they want to do. It means that they understand themself. In addition, they like to spend their money on donations.

Racism against Chinese and Papuans

There are many incidents of racism against each other. Indonesia is a country with different tribes and different religions. However, there are still many Indonesian people who have not been able to accept each other's differences. Racism is a form of hate, intimidation, or violence that is detrimental.

Racism in Indonesia is indeed related to the colonization of Europeans in the archipelago, to be part of their strategy. In the case of a monkey designation, a person who is addressed with that call will be dropped in the structure of the social hierarchy. Academics who have over ten years of research in Papua say Papuans have long experienced racist treatment in Indonesia. However, Papuans are always required to be silent, for the sake of unity and harmony.

When there is a white, narrow society, everyone will insult Cino, Cino Londo. And everyone will mention Singkek because it is also considered rich. The hatred was built up over the years because there were political issues about communists, who later labeled China as a communist. This hatred does not stop there, the Chinese people are also considered as Cukong and extortion of local people's property.

Racism can have serious consequences and cause people to be uninvolved in discussions about their own future. It can be used to deprive them of dignity, land, autonomy, and rights. The impact of racism for the controlling race will make the minority race will eventually disappear, the outbreak of unity and unity in a particular region or territory of power, mental health that is influenced by everything that is said by someone in the form of acts of racism, triggering various meanings of endless social conflict.

To stop it is to realize that everyone is different. So, you won't get caught up in stereotypes, if you already have stereotypes, change them little by little. Or, try to respond to others in a better way, seeing things from someone else's point of view.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The first impression when meeting someone is very important. because our personality can also be judged by others from the way we dress. someone might think we can't be good friends just by the way we dress when we first meet them, or someone might think we are friendly people by the way we dress. there are some of the most common ways of dressing that are often the judgment of a person.

The first example is when we see someone with unkempt or dirty clothes. often we feel disgusted or dislike them. the way someone dresses like that is often branded as a sloppy, lazy, and unreliable person. when in fact, the person who dresses like that may feel like he doesn't want to dress well, or maybe he's just not feeling well and prefers comfortable clothes that may seem too casual.

Second example is when attending a job interview, we always wear neat and clean clothes to make a good first impression. A good first impression is very helpful in the interviewer assessing our personality. The interviewer of course wants competent and reliable people to work for his company. Therefore, the first impression we give to the interviewer must give the impression that we are the employee he is looking for, a reliable, competent, and charismatic employee.

This last example is slightly different, namely the first impression of someone wearing dark clothes. People who wear dark clothes look like people who are strong in character, indifferent, but actually soft-hearted. often people dress in dark also to hide their body shape, because black is considered to be able to hide the curves of the body well. there are also those who think dark colored clothes look elegant and graceful. it all just depends on the perspective of each of us.

It can be concluded that the way of dressing is one of the main factors in personality assessment. The clothes we wear can determine the first impression other people have on us. But in my opinion, the way we dress can’t always determine a person's personality entirely. A person may be changing his/her style, or following someone else's style of dress. We should not judge a person only from the outside, because the outside and inside of a person can be very different.
