“In the morning we sailed out to pull our lobster pots. Osh turned into the wind at each float so the skiff went into iorns, its sails limp and luffing, and than tethered us to the buoy and hauled the pot up, hand over hand, and into the boat so I could reach in and grab the lobster while it cackled its claws and arched its back, flapping its tail madly” (99)

Lobster fishing is one of the ways Osh and Crow have to make money to buy things they cannot harvest, like sugar and spices and clothing. They go to the grocers and get their lobster traded in for money or credit.

“Along the coast there was a skiff tied up at a pier and the remnants of ruined buildings—cellar holes and such—and when we climbed up from the beach we could see knee-high stone walls that straggled across the moors like old scars. Rabbit trails. A dirt lane that seemed to lead to nowhere. But no sign of the bird keeper.” Penikies was a leprosy colony, and where Crow thinks she's from. Osh, Ms. Maggie, and Crow make two trips out there, on the second, Crow finds the bird keeper tied up in a bedsheet and gagged on the floor by a man who was digging up the island. She also finds a carving of a lamb and a feather on the wall of a cabin.

“Even before I stepped foot onshore, I was startled by the place. It reeked of whale and waste. All along the dock, there were vast pans of barrels covered with seaweed and hundreds of bales of cotton waiting for the mills. Men everywhere, of every color, stripped to the waist, labored in the sun. Horses worked alongside engines alongside people alongside a harbor afloat with trash and oil. In the distance, factories smoked their pipes. Past the docks: tall buildings and long straight streets.” (144-45)

Crow goes to New Bedford to try and find her long-lost brother at the orphanage where he grew up and is told that he went to sea. On her way back to the dock, she finds the man who was posing as the birdman going into a pawn shop.

“Like the first [cottage], this one had no furniture or floor at all. And, as before, the ground was all holes and mounds of loose dirt…[There was] another lamb [Carved on the wall in one corner]. Beside it, someone had carved something else. A feather.” (117)

This cottage was presumably where crows parents lived, and where Crow may have been born. The carving on the wall made it clear that she most likely was from Penikiese, as how else would they know about the feather on her cheek? This also helped Crow associate herself with the lamb, a connection that would later help her find the treasure.

“So one day that fall, when the sky was the color of forget-me-nots and the sea wanted to play, I reluctantly crossed over to Cuttyhunk with Miss Maggie and followed her up the steps of the schoolhouse, through the door, and straight into the kind of confusion that opened my eyes wide, and straight into the kind of confusion that opened my eyes wide, and then made me want to shut them again.” (26)

When Crow tries to go to school, she is made fun of, and called a leper, and Miss Maggie defends her. Even the schoolmaster wipes the door with alcohol after Crow touches it. This led Crow to ask about what leprosy was, and was told for the first time about Penikese.
