The ending of the text felt as wholesome as this book could possibly manage, all the while fitting the narratives that were first introduced to us as readers. For the text to end in a proper manner, that being a final denial of the military complexes that Yossarian found himself ensnared by, gives a fulfilling conclusion while illustrating the continued problem. Being that Yossarian did not actually solve anything in his choice to desert the military, a future soldier could easily have identical experiences to him, thus adding to the list of cyclical processes that define the novel.

- Joseph Heller, born in 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, would come to find himself as a part of the protest literature movement during WWII.
- Heller himself fought in WWII, flying 60 combat missions as a bombardier.
- Heller was a frequent critic of American politics, even beyond their involvement in WWII. With other critical texts such Good as Gold, that being a satire on life in Washington, D.C., Heller became a leading figure in criticism of U.S. life and policies, doing so through the medium of literature.

“‘Some of those invitations were mighty generous, but we couldn’t accept any because we were Indians and all the best hotels that were inviting us wouldn’t accept Indians as guests. Racial prejudice is a terrible thing, Yossarian. It really is. It’s a terrible thing to treat a decent, loyal Indian like a n****r, k*ke, w*p, or sp*c.’ Chief White Halfoat nodded slowly with conviction” (Heller 44)

Using his satirical tone through Halfoat’s ridiculous dialogue, Heller forms a comedic mood for the scene. Halfoat’s story is already satire, as he is claiming that his family has “oil-sensing abilities” due to how often they get kicked off their land by oil companies, with the claims getting more and more ridiculous. However, in this passage, he directly contradicts himself multiple times. He says that he was invited to hotels while simultaneoulsy not being allowed to stay at them. He says that racial prejudice is evil, while acting prejudiced towards several other racial groups in the next sentence. The irony of this is apparent, which makes the scene have an overall mood of comedy.
