Reflections (Speaking & Writing for Learning 2018) by Wong Wai Leng

In this session, we discussed the importance of MEETING and STRETCHING our students' language competency (by language we mean both English and disciplinary-specific language/discourse). Describe one way that you MEET and another way that you STRETCH your students' language competency. Reflect on the effectiveness of your method/strategy. If you haven't tried out any strategy, then propose a strategy you can try out.

I've exposed students to the concept of tangents (http://emptyeasel.com/2008/11/18/avoiding-tangents-9-visual-blunders-every-artist-should-watch-out-for/) since Wk1. But till now (Wk8), they are still making tangent mistakes graphically. The only way to stretch the students' understanding of the word and concept of tangent is to repeatedly point the error out when it happens. It will also help if this concept is repeatedly reinforce in other drawing and graphic design related modules.

The students struggle with writing observations that take on a neutral tone. They tend to inject their personal opinions and assumptions into the observation records they make (ie, the child was very naughty; the teacher didn't scold him because he was too cute) and they struggle to take on an academic tone in writing (the child was "stoning"; it was like so noisy; so like the teacher then...etc).
I think to MEET their level of competency, we provided them with good samples of observation records for them to dissect and analysis in greater detail. To STRETCH them, we had them work in groups to do an observation record based on a scenario played out by their peers. These observation records were done "live" on Google Slides and we had the opportunity for peer-critique as well as for me to provide them with immediate feedback on what to work on in terms of writing objectively.

MEETING our students' language competency.
In nursing, disciplinary specific language or terms is essential for our students to communicate in the clinical environment. Often, during student's own reflection, they struggle with medical abbreviation during hand over report. As a clinical facilitator, I supported the students by showing them the hospital approved abbreviation list. In addition, I broke the list into chunks from the most used abbreviation/vocab to the least that they can find in the clinical area.

STRETCHING our students' language competency.
Based on the student's reflection, I will expose to them as many medical abbreviations that is used in the clinical environment. In addition, for those which they do not know, I will follow up on their learning. Likewise, to better prepare them for report writing, I provided them samples of report and instill the principles of report writing. So that, they will make minimal corrected mistakes.
