Teaching causation is important because it can be applicable across various time periods, disciplines, and real-life applications

All history is is one cause and effect after another. Everything happens because something before it did, so it probably the most foundational skill needed for social studies

Students need to understand the 'why' and 'how' to understand the outcome and how we are affected by our/other's actions, environment, etc. It broadens their perspective in order to make connections and predictions for the future.

These skills are developmental so it is difficult for some to connect cause/effect. They don't always have the necessary vocabulary, and many mistakenly think the next event is always an effect of the previous event.
