The project began as a research project called BackRub in 1996, and the name Google comes from the mathematical term "googol," which is one followed by 100 zeros.          <description><![CDATA[<p>The Cold War was a proxy war between the United States and the Soviet Union. During this time increased tensions between both nations led by the development of nuclear weapons in WW2. The US realized the power of technology and put money into it. The growth of the technological field  led to the invention of Google.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Social Impact:</strong> During the war, as tension was building so was the desire for power. Nuclear weaponry became a priority and it led to the major emphasis on the STEM related jobs we see today. This "emphasis" allowed for greater funding to be poured into the education for these subjects and allow for projects like google to be created.</p>]]></description>
