Q1: "The two enemies stood glaring at one another for along silent moment. Each had a rifle in his band, each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind..." "...And before the moment of hesitation had given way to action, a deed of Nature's own violence overwhelmed them both. A fierce shriek if the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads, and ere they could leap aside, a mass of falling beech tree had thundered down on them" (190).

In this piece of the story, both enemies are staring at one another, rifle in their hands. Right as they were gonna move, nature had other plans. A beech tree fell on them, crushing them both, restricting them from moving. This leaves them isolated from their men, leaving them both to themselves.

Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym were about to shoot one other, but were interrupted by Nature's force. The storm strike down the beech tree, which thumped down on top of both men. The beech tree restrains both men from using their rifles to harm one other. Since the beech tree has immobilized both men, they broke the silence by talking to one other. Then, Ulrich reaches for his wine flask and willingly shares it with his enemy, Georg. This symbolizes that nature does not comply with man's feuds and are the true threat. Nature can be dangerous when least expected. Nature showed its true dominance against the human race, proving it by crushing the two men who were harmed the most deadly man-made weapon, rifles. Both men found it to be useless to continue their battle after being defeated by nature. Then Ulrich verbally surrenders by sharing his wine flask with Georg.

Q2: "Could you reach this flask if I threw it to you?" asked Ulrich suddenly. "There is good wine in it, and one may as well be as comfortable as one ca. Let us drink, even if tonight one of us dies"(191).

In this section of the story, both men are pinned to the ground by the beech tree. Since they no longer can shoot each other, they began to realized that fighting over this piece of land is meaningless. Then Ulrich broke the silence by asking if Georg wanted a sip of his wine flask.
