Halloween began over 2,000 years ago with the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and parts of France, celebrated Samhain on October 31. They believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead became thin, and spirits could return to Earth. To protect themselves, people wore scary costumes and masks to frighten away evil spirits. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III made November 1 All Saints’ Day to honor all saints. The night before was called All Hallows’ Eve, which later became Halloween. When Irish immigrants came to America in the 19th century, they brought Halloween traditions with them.

Let’s look at how different countries celebrate Halloween. First, in the United States and Canada. They put on costumes, decorate houses and enjoy traditional ways of celebrating Halloween, like trick-or-treating. Secondly, in Mexico, they have a special holiday called Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which is celebrated within Halloween. On the other side, in Korea, theme parks and popular strips open commercial festivals for people to enjoy, and it has settled down as a core tradition of Halloween in Korea. But, there was a accident in Itaewon on 2022 which made 159 people die from stampede. After the accident Korean people suddenly avoided celebrating Halloween. However, as time passes, people are starting to celebrate Halloween again.

Many countries have different kinds of Halloween as we have explained. And Halloween has a long history  which is about 2000 years long . Also Halloween is on October 31th. We wish South Korea would celebrate Halloween as a holiday where people come together and have fun. We can imply trick or treat into our community. Halloween is upcoming so enjoy your Halloween!

In this part, I'll explain you the cause of the drought in Gangneung. At first, rainfall in this summer was lower than other rainfall in summer. Also, rainfall from last winter to this spring is lower than last year.

To make matter worse, the temperature has been rising due to global warming since this summer. Thus, water stored in Obong reservoir, which is the major supplier of water in Gangneung had dried up. In result, the usable water became deficient, and as this term become longer, current situation had happened.

The climate change, including global warming, has effected us and the environment heavily. This time the climate change threatened us and our daily lives in a form of drought, and the citizens of Gangneung has suffered greatly.

Although the drought has come to an end at September 22th, people should know that this isn’t a one time occasion. The climate change is rapidly increasing its influence, and it’ll effect our lives more and more often while doing so.

People must be wary of climate changes and try to save the environment, so no one else suffers from it, including droughts, like Gangneung and its people had.

Due to the severe drought, the water reserve rates of the Obong Reservoir, the main source of water, have fallen to their lowest level ever. This shows that some areas have been experiencing severe water shortages, such as the suspension of tap water supply.

Also, In order to overcome the drought in Gangneung, the Noodle Festival and Coffee Festival, which were scheduled for October 2025, were canceled once, but the two festivals were held again at the end of October 2025 as the drought situation was lifted. In September 2025, the city of Gangneung announced that it was canceling these festivals in order to share the suffering of its citizens and focus on water conservation due to the severe drought.
