My main thought during the initial ZOOM call, and then after going through Module 1, was how we could accommodate learners at different developmental levels. I do think that all skills mentioned (empath, problem solving, emotion management, learning) are typically lagging in many of my littles, and this will help them to have some of the same instruction / focus in other areas, rather than just in an SEL course, a pull-out session, or an intervention, and it provides that same instruction and common language to all students, which removes stigma from the interventions. I'm excited to plan for instruction using this program, and working the skill-building reinforcement activities into intervention groups as well.

As with any curriculum you will have to spend some time preparing but it doesn’t seem like an insane amount of work. I also like how puppets are used to engage the kids. My second thought is how it was said to be a preventative tool, and I think is what we really need.

My biggest questions are similar to others, how much time should be dedicated, how many reinforcement activities should we aim for, and can all lessons be done in a school year?

My initial reaction to the first zoom session and module is appreciation that we are being asked to teach the very things I see as necessary for success. The fact that we will have a curriculum that gives us the ideas and lessons in a purposeful sequence is great! Students NEED these skills. All people NEED these skills. By focusing on them consistently we are setting our students up for success!

I have had the opportunity to use Second Step as I co-taught SEL with my school social worker, last year. My thoughts after those experiences and watching Module 1 are that this is an engaging and beneficial program for our little learners. Packed full of useful easy to acquire life skills. The puppets and games were a hit in my class. Lessons were easy to integrate into daily learning. The kids became confident with the skills they learned and would freely remind each other of skills they should try using to solve problems. Often, I could stand back and observe.
It never took us longer than 30 minutes to complete a lesson and it was easy to make connections to/reinforce skills taught throughout the day. Some connections/ reinforcements were planned and purposeful (ie. reinforced in a read aloud) and some were naturally occurring.
I am curious about the online learning piece.

I really think the home link is going to be the biggest piece to this curriculum especially with the shift in the ways school is changing with online learning. I think that the lessons look fairly engaging for all students, including the puppets for them to interact with and could possibly be done via zoom as well. The picture cards look very vivid and easy to follow. It should be fairly easy to implement each day as a part of our social community in our classroom, even if just for a short amount of time daily. It also seems like it should tie in with zones, the kindness curriculum and/or sunshine circles as another piece within our classroom. I completely agree that children who can self regulate and have social emotional skills are ready to learn! With our young kiddos the academic piece will come once they have the skills to control themselves within a classroom environment.

I really like the "skills everyday" component that is included. Embedding Second Step skills in daily instruction/activities is where I see the biggest impact being made. Not only will this allow for reinforcement but it will provide an opportunity to reach students who may not have grasped the concept in the initial lesson. Students will get to apply and use the skills in authentic/natural situations. My question is just figuring out what I want to use. In just a couple of years I went from not really having an SEL curriculum to now having PBIS lessons, ZONES, Sunshine Circles, and the Kindness Curriculum.

The first thing that I really liked was how engaging, informative and to the point these videos were. I liked that it asked questions from a teacher's perspective. Thinking about the demographics of students I have at my school (and our district as a whole), I think this is going to be a great program especially since it just focuses on Social Emotional Skills and Self-Regulation Skills--two things that kids need at such a young age to be successful at school and in life. I like that it is all there for you and that it has been piloted in real classrooms (that they understand the realities we have). I liked how specific it was in telling us that in order for this to be effective, it has to be taught in order with the skills for learning being first and then problem solving last--that these lessons build upon each other. I am interested in seeing how this can be incorporated into my classroom! I am also interested in seeing what other items I can use to help supplement this during different parts of my day--read alouds, transitions, etc. I am also curious to see how this can be incorporated with the unknown of what next year will look like! Regardless, I am excited and wish I could jump in and start it! I am excited to learn more as we continue!

Thank you for inspiring me to make a bitmoji classroom for second step. It is a work in progress, but I hope to organize this for students to quickly find resources in case of school closure. I am also hoping to use this program as a tool to build upon our current "circle time" structure with lessons since this program seems fairly easy to use. My questions mostly revolve around our current environment. Is there a culturally responsive component? Will we be able to have circles? Are there enough lessons for daily use or are the lessons weekly so we can gain deeper understanding of concepts?

I liked hearing actually how this program runs. At my old district, we didn't have training on how to do the lessons. The counselor always did it but she was always pulled away for the MS/HS student issues, so they made us do it. So I enjoy that I can actually learn how to teach this and why.
