"Shadowing Practice."

shadowing practice is a speaking activity that focuses on imitating spoken English by shadowing a model speaker. This activity can be conducted in a classroom setting or during online language lessons.

We need audio recordings of short dialogues or monologues, songs in English such as recordings of native speakers, podcast episodes, YouTube videos and also, we need headphones or speakers

First, explain the concept of shadowing to the students. Let them know that they will be listening to spoken English and repeating it as closely as possible. Emphasize the importance of focusing on pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm.

Choose short dialogues or monologues with clear and natural speech. Ensure that the content is suitable for the students' proficiency level.

Listening and Shadowing:

Play the audio recording for the students. Encourage them to listen carefully and pay attention to the speaker's pronunciation and intonation.

Instruct the students to repeat each sentence or phrase immediately after they hear it, trying to mimic the speaker's voice as closely as possible. Make sure to encourage students to speak aloud and confidently, even if they make mistakes. The goal is to focus on rhythm and flow rather than perfect accuracy.

You can replay the audio recording multiple times, allowing students to continue shadowing and practice. Offer feedback and guidance as needed. Point out areas where students can improve their pronunciation or intonation.

After the shadowing practice, facilitate a discussion with the students. Ask them about their experience with the activity and any challenges they faced.

Encourage students to reflect on what they learned from the exercise and how they can apply it to their speaking skills in everyday situations.

This activity improves pronunciation and intonation: Shadowing helps students develop a more accurate pronunciation and natural intonation by imitating native speakers, Regular practice of shadowing can lead to increased fluency and confidence in speaking English, shadowing helps students improve their comprehension of spoken English.

Singing and Reading Songs' Lyrics

This is an interactive activity about speaking which involves enhancing the understand of songs' lyrics and analyzing their meaning. It is recommended mainly during face-to-face class sessions, as it is easier for students to learn about this; as well as interactive too.

First, the teacher puts on the song Hold the line by the group Toto with the lyrics; and tells the students to sing it and analyze it in groups. After the song ends, the students are asked about the words hat they learned and explain the meaning about it in their own words; and write a report regarding their experience in this activity. Plus, sing the song frequently and read its lyrics helps to enhance pronunciation and intonation, and gaining new vocabulary too. Making it as an assignment would be considered as interactive and entertaining for students, as well as a good way of learning.

The resources are headphones, computer, or speakers; and write in a notebook their

thoughts on the songs' lyrics. Last but not least, it would be excellent for every student to share their opinion in class about the song and its lyrics as a rewarding experience. There is a great variety of songs for understand and analyze the lyrics, since I consider it resourceful and helpful.

Intensive tasks may also be described as limited response tasks (Madsen, 1983), mechanical tasks (Underhill, 1987), or what classroom pedagogy would label controlled responses.

One of the more popular ways to elicit oral language performance at both intensive and extensive levels is a picture-cued stimulus that requires a description from the test-taker. Pictures may be very simple, designed to elicit a word or a phrase; somewhat more elaborate and "busy"; or composed of a series that tells a story or incident. Brown, H.D, & Abeywickrama, P. (2010)

Description of the activity

The following activity: “Picture-cued & Storytelling” involves supplying students with a set of four identical sets of numbered pictures, each minimally distinct from the others by one or two factors. One test-taker is directed by a cue card to describe one of the four pictures in as few words as possible. The second test-taker must then identify the picture. Picture-cued multiple-choice description for two test-takers (L, S)

The next step is creating a storytelling circle where students take turns allowing them to practice and enhance their oral storytelling skills.

Developing the activity

Selecting images for storytelling sessions based on a theme. Forming a circle with the pupils and implementing a rotation schedule for narrative rounds.

One moderately successful picture-cued technique involves a pairing of two test-takers. Brown, H.D, & Abeywickrama, P. (2010) Encouraging students to share their stories orally within the circle, focusing on engaging the audience, maintaining coherence, and utilizing expressive language.

After every storytelling session, peers provide honest feedback that highlights strengths and makes recommendations for progress.

Resources to be used

Picture-cued multiple-choice description for two test-takers.

Description:

Picture-cued homework is an educational approach that uses images or graphics to help students understand concepts or perform activities. In this type of task, images are used as a form of visual guide to explain a specific topic or concept. For example, in mathematics, diagrams or graphs can be used to help students understand concepts such as fractions or geometry. In science, images can be used to explain biological or physical processes. The idea is that images help students visualize abstract concepts and facilitate their understanding and learning.

Description of the activity:

With the image presented, students must find different objects and name them in order to expand their knowledge of each of them. In addition to enriching knowledge, this will also help students investigate and look for different ways to identify the correct name of objects.

Steps:

1- Students must identify the names of the objects shown in the image.

2- Create sentences using the names of objects.

3- Tell a brief story using your imagination and the objects found in the image. (Use a minimum of 5 objects).

4- In a group of 3 students, present the story previously created.

Resources:

1- Illustrations and diagrams: Visual representations of concepts or processes that help students visualize and better understand information.

2- Infographics: Graphics that combine text and images to explain a topic clearly and concisely.

3- Multimedia presentations: Using slide presentations, videos, or other digital media to present information in a visually appealing way.
