Using your answers from the questions, how are ideas about poverty/social class reflected in this chapter? Consider the events, settings and characterisations above.  Rowley Park HS has a culture of bulling which often exists in low socioeconomic areas where there are few resources and schools are understaffed.  It is an environment which ridicules academic achievement causing Nate to hide his intelligence.  The derelict town indicates that it is poorly resourced and poorly maintained.

  1. In p.e Brock Tuwy, had provoked Nate by first kicking his left foot on the bridge of his nose, then he continues to agonise Nate by saying “McKee caught the ball with his face” “nice catch” then continues to laugh. 
  2. Merrick then responds to this situation by launching himself onto Brocks back, then starts to dig his fingers into his eyeballs. 
  3. On the walk home, the setting is somewhat abandoned (abandoned Jean factory, disused warehouses, empty public swimming pool). Merrick chases after Nate and accuses Nate of ditching him. 
  4. The ideas of social class in this chapter are represented as lower class because of the school not doing anything towards the situation, the abandoned streets.

  1. Nance used to live in a small town, filled with nice people. Nance misses her parents a lot, but her parents don’t think too well of dec, her mother said he “has the manner of a man passing through”. 
  2. Merrick is upset with Nate because Nate had ran away. Nance grows handreages to show that she wants to make the house somewhat more like a family home.
  3. Nate notices that dec is either drunk or high and in which "Dec is looking for a fight". Decs aggression can be seen as “pulls out a bar stool and pushes me into it”. 
  4. The concepts of poverty and low social class are demonstrated by dec in the novel by having an abusive toxically masculine men that control their family.

  1. Jake imitates Dec toxic masculinist behavior by grabbing his crouch just like Dec does. 
  2. The word that Otis says is '🤬' which makes Nancy and Nate react by laughing which Otis thinks at first is crying which makes every start to get emotional. 
  3. Dec tells Nate that there mum has tracked them down, which causes Nate's head start to spin as well as him wanting to go see his mother.

  1. Dec is shown to have toxic masculinity because he makes Nate and Nancey do all chores around the house this is shown as "Dec has been making me do everything Nancey can't do..... Dec is the man of the house and doesn't do drone work" this is because he thinks him being the man of the house gives him privileges to not do anything. 
  2. Macey is clearly upset about the Youth being threaten to be shut-down. Evidence used to support this is the quote "she is almost in tears and it is making me uncomfortable"  
  3. There isn't enough laptops at schools because of the low funding towards education in the town which causes   Nate to feel like there is a unfair system because all the bigger kids can push all the smaller kids away. The quote that is use to support this is " were smarter not stronger, we don't need to chase prey anymore. 
  4. the questions above show that even the school and youth place is effected by the poverty which the town is surrounded by, as well as growing the realization that Dec shows strong signs of toxic masculinity, this then shows the social class which then surrounds the family as well

The event throughout the chapter show that the house that Nate lives in is shown as a run down and molding apartment flat, his father is shown to have toxic masculinist traits which makes it a hard time for Nate to live his daily life, as well as the poverty making the house look bad which then results in Nancy trying to make if better with the plants

  1. Jake copy’s decs behavior by acting/pretending that he is older than he is. For example jake  rubs his crotch like dec does.
  2. In the chapter Otis says the word "Fück", in which Nate and nace responds by trying to put them to sleep  
  3. Decs “big news” to tell Nate is that his mum wants to see him, but dec does and Nate doesn’t want to see her “she left us”, dec comforts nate by putting his hand on his head and saying “mate it’s okay to be angry.”

  • In the novel, Dec is represented as a toxic masculine guy. This is because Dec makes Nate and Nance do all the housework. 
  • Macy is sad and almost in tears because the youth centre is threatening to close, and she had put everything she could into the youth centre and fought for it for a long time. 
  • In Nate’s school, There are not enough laptops for every kid in the class. In which make Nate feel it’s “dumb” as some of the kids already own laptops but still go for the ones at school. Nate figures that it would not be an issue if these students used their own laptops so no one in the class would be left out. 
  • In this chapter Poverty and low social class are represented by the kids fighting over the laptops (Q. 3), the abusive parents (Q. 1). and the youth owners not caring for all that is done for the centre (Q. 2).
