The farm was so important to Lennie because it represented a dream to him, a chance to prove himself to himself and to George that he can be a good and gentle person. To George it’s important because it’s his opportunity to stop running from issues, if there are no issues, there is no running. The farm will be their place to settle down. The book focuses so heavily on the idea of the farm because it’s an unrealistic expectation of a future many people couldn’t achieve for it’s time period. It got personal and honest, representing everything you work for and the rewards you reap from it.

The American Dream is a generalization that appeals to the straight, cis, white middle class. The idea of having a family with a nice house an a nice car. It’s not true for the majority of people anymore, and was honestly indoctrinated in young minds when the idea was first introduced to make America seem like the perfect free land - which it’s not. John expresses these ideas especially with Crooks, since he expresses in the barn that dreams can’t come true.
