Captain Joseph Hazelwood was captain of the vessel.  When the ship struck the reef, he was not present at the helm.  Hazelwood was under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred, and asleep.  He left control of the ship to the Third Mate, who was not qualified to drive the tanker, and sleep deprived at the time.  There was also not enough crew members aboard the tanker. The tanker was also taking a different route than which was normally taken. Exxon also had some blame to take, because they were not following proper safety measures. The trauma impacted the residents of Alaska, and took years for them to recover.
