Underlying Causes

The radar in the tanker was broken, and had been for a year prior, and was never fixed. Captain Joseph Hazelwood was captain of the vessel. When the ship struck the reef, he was not present at the helm. Hazelwood was under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred, and asleep. He left control of the ship to the Third Mate, who was not qualified to drive the tanker, and sleep deprived at the time. There was also not enough crew members aboard the tanker. The tanker was also taking a different route than which was normally taken. Exxon also had some blame to take, because they were not following proper safety measures. They did not install proper iceberg monitoring equipment.

Safety was definitely compromised during this incident. The oil was highly toxic, and had a huge affect on the economy, people, and wildlife. The lives of many animals were compromised because of this crash. The ship also could have sunk, causing injuries or even death to those aboard. The ship was in jeopardy of capsizing if it floated off the reef.

When the tanker collided with the reef, 8 of its 11 cargo tanks were ruptured, causing 10.8 million gallons of crude oil to spill into the water. 1,300 miles of coastline were contaminated with oil. About 250,000 seabirds, 2,800 sea otters, up to 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles and at least 22 killer whales were killed, along with an unknown number of salmon, herring, and other marine wildlife. Fisheries were closed, and some had to stay closed for over a year after the spill, due to the ban on commercial fishing.

There are many serious long term effects of this oil spill. As of 2016, about 20 acres of Prince William Sound shoreline are still contaminated with 21,000 gallons of oil, and this oil is still just as toxic, and decomposing very slowly. The trauma impacted the residents of Alaska, and took years for them to recover. The fishing industry collapsed, and it took many years for the population levels of wildlife to be restored.

Recreational and commercial fishing was put to a halt, and people could not fish due to the water contamination. This caused a huge loss of money. Fishermen went bankrupt, and it took years for salmon and other wildlife populations to return back to their previous numbers. Tourism was also down to a record low for the following year, and 26,000 people lost their jobs. People also became depressed and isolated. There was an increase in suicide, family violence, alcoholism, and divorce.

Up to $580 million was lost due to the reduction of recreational fishing. Commercial fishing also took a large financial hit. The tourism industry lost about $2.4 billion in business due to the oil spill. Exxon spent $112 million to replace the sea otters, harbor seals, seabirds, and eagles that were killed from the oil. Exxon also spent $4.3 billion on cleanup and compensation costs.
