Students can get an immediate confidence boost when they feel that their teachers believe in them. It is important as a teacher to remember that all of your students want you to believe in them. Showing them praise, even if they are giving a bit of effort, will help them be more focused and they will want to do better! As teachers, I think we always see the negative first and then the positive. We need to be more focused on the improvements they are making rather than all of the mistakes!

Students are assigned a "buddy" who is not their teacher. At the beginning and end of everyday, they meet with their buddy for 2 minutes. The staff identifies students are struggling to meet their educational needs and will just sit and talk with them. This allows the student to open up and be able to say what is on their mind. The child gets the satisfaction of knowing that someone is excited to see them in the morning and at the end of the day. I think utilizing this in whatever school I am at as a teacher will be super beneficial!

Teachers at the beginning of every school year gather and make a list of all students within the school district. Then each individual teacher will put a check mark if they know the students name, face, and a personal story about them. This allows the teachers to see just how much they know about their students. When everyone is done checking the list, teachers will figure out who they need to get to know better. This strategy is amazing and will make every student feel wanted by someone in the school!

Every time a student does something nice or helps someone they are able to put a pom-pom in the jar. The teacher will ask students what it was that they did to be able to do that. It is a visual way for students to see that helping others is fun and a positive thing! I would love to utilize this in my own classroom!

The first step is to write down your thoughts on a piece of paper without your name on it. The second step is to crumble the piece of paper and have a snowball fight with the balls of paper. Afterwards, everyone finds a crumbled up paper and reads what their peers are stressed about. This is a great interactive and hands on strategy to show your students that they are not alone. It creates awareness of stress and depression!

Giving students a high five or just a simple smile can change their whole mood.

This article explains different exercises and techniques that will help you understand your students better. One exercise I really liked from the article is to have students tell or write about what their goals are. In the elementary level, the question would be asked as, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Most students will have an answer to this. It shows you as the teacher what your students interests are and it can also help you when in the classroom by seeing their work ethics.

This article gives teachers a list of social-emotional learning activities. One activity I really liked was an activity called "Appreciation, apology, aha!" The students would sit in a circle and share something that they appreciate, something they want to apologize for, or a realization they are having. An example would be, " I am sorry for talking to my friend when the teacher was teaching." After the student shares their statement, tell students that if they also feel this way to snap, clap, etc... This shows students that it is nice to show what you are feeling and you can see that your classmates may be feeling the same things! I would absolutely like to utilize this activity within my classroom.
