He was a member of one of the most powerful families in Athens, but didn't want the aristocrats to run the government. He was able to over throw the aristocracy once and for all and established a completely new government. Under Cleisthenes leadership, Athens developed the worlds first democracy. For this reason he is sometimes called the Father of Democracy.
