The coronary arteries help to supply oxygen rich blood to the entire heart. Coronary artery disease makes it difficult for the heart to get as much oxygen rich blood as need to pump blood to the rest of the body. Coronary artery disease is the cause of plaque building up in the arteries while reduces the flow of blood and that can cause problems for the body since the blood will have difficulty pumping the required amount of blood from the coronaries arteriers to the smaller arteries that travel to the different parts of the body.

Coronary artery diseas usually begins with damage to the coronary arteries through different factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a sedentary lifestyle. When the walls of the artery becomes damaged, plaque which is made of cholesterol and other waste start to pile up in a process known as atherosclerosis which is shown below. If the plaque ruptures, platelets from red blood cells will try to repair the site by gathering at the site which may grow a clot. With a clot, the heart will not be able to get the oxygen filled blood necessary to do its duty and make succumb to a heart attack which can impact other functions of the body.

Symptoms and Treatments

Symptoms that may show coronary artery disease are chest pain, shortness of breath and heart attack. During a stressful event, a person with this disease may experience chest pain in the middle or left of the chest due to higher blood pressure. This could also be a possibly of a heart attack which is usually accompanied by a large pressure in the chest or sometimes no apparent symptoms at all. Also shortness of breath is common due to the heart's inability to pump enough blood for the body's needs. Treatment would be lifestyle changes such as maintaining a diet low in cholesterol and staying physically active. Medications such as blood thinners can also be prescribed to help allow the blood to easily travel through the blocked artery until the plaque clears up. If all else fails, there is always the option of coronary artery bypass surgery by allowing the blood to flow through another artery or vein.

Anther condition that may arise from coronary artery disease would a heart attack also known as a myocardial infarction. The pain that occurs from the blood clot as a result of coronary artery disease leads to a heart attack. This can be fatal for people, because a heart attack occurs when there is no oxygen filled blood reaching the heart which can stop the heart from pumping out more blood.and starve it of important nutrients and can be seriously life threatening. Symptoms can range from mild pain to severe pain to no pain at all n the chest, however loss of oxygen to the heart will cause other parts of the body to fail without blood pumping it back in the system.
