Human Right violations occurring in the Bosnia War. NATO intervened in 1992. This was a large scale military operation, including a total of 60,000 troops, including some 12,000 UK personnel. Primary objectives were to help the UN deliver humanitarian relief to those experiencing persecution. Also, to monitor and enforce the UN “no-fly zone” over Bosnia and carrying out air strikes to lift the siege of Sarajevo. Furthermore, this response led to the creation of the UNPROFOR, the name given to the UN Protection Force in Bosnia. Creating this showed a clear intention to remain steadfast in their response to the violations and stick to resolving them, despite increasing military action against them.

A joint declaration by 27 United Nations member states expressing concern about Egypt’s repeated use of excessive force against demonstrators turned the international spotlight on Egypt’s human rights abuses. It was the first such action at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva since Egyptian security forces killed hundreds of protesters in dispersing a sit-in at Raba’a Square in Cairo on August 14, 2013.

A United Nations group is investigating allegations of human rights abuses by North Dakota law enforcement against Native American protesters, with indigenous leaders testifying about “acts of war” they observed during mass arrests at an oil pipeline protest. The pipeline protests have become increasingly intense over the last two weeks as construction has moved closer to the Missouri river and as police have aggressively responded to activists’ demonstrations with arrests, pepper spray, riot gear and army tanks.

The government of Eritrea is responsible for "systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations, forcing hundreds of thousands of refugees to flee the country," according to a United Nations investigation. The United Nations interviewed more than 500 confidential witnesses about the nation in the Horn of Africa, hearing accounts of sexual slavery, extrajudicial killings and forced labor. The report details the specific rights violations and the methods employed by the Eritrean government to control its population.

1) On 9 August, the Libyan government claimed that 85 civilians were killed in NATO airstrikes on the village of Majer near Zliten. NATO stated they thought they were targetting 9 buildings that had not been checked for actual enemy contacts, the story has been the source of controversy however due to a lack of evidence of several wounded.

2) The security situation in Mali made headlines in 2013 following French intervention, which arguably exacerbated conditions in the wartorn country. The ongoing armed conflict led to appalling human rights violations fraught with a lack of government accountability. In June, UN investigation revealed countless cases of extrajudicial executions, torture and enforced disappearances of civilians carried out by both Tuareg rebels and the army. Soldiers were accused of torturing Tuaregs while French-led forces attempted to oust Islamist militants.

3) NATO's bombing of Belgrade last year has been referred to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for legal scrutiny.

HRW (Human Rights Watch) is drawing up a detailed report that will be submitted to the war crimes tribunal at The Hague. Among the examples of targeting violations it will cite are electricity grids, oil refineries and radio and television stations.

The report is also expected to attack the use of cluster bombs by US and British aircraft. At least 5 percent of these bombs failed to explode on impact, and many lie unexploded in Kosovo, where HRW say they are still killing or maiming two civilians a day.
