Macklemore in his song, uses logos to state the issue of same sex marriage and was trying to get across to the audience and make them believe that everyone is equal; homosexual or not. The first example Macklemore uses to show that everyone was born with the same love, he stated the line, "And God loves all his children it's somehow forgotten/ But we paraphrase a book written 3,500 hundred years ago." The bible "written 3,500 hundred years ago" didn't say anything about God not approving or loving a specific group of people, which in this case is the homosexual, it said that he "loves all his children"; however, with us being judgmental of each other, we choose to say what is wrong and right from our own belief. To get in deeper with his point of view, he gives his reason as to why the way we treat the homosexual is wrong from along the stated line of "It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion/The same fight that led people to walk-outs and sit-ins." Back then, fight broke out between peoples because of ones' believes that a certain group of people does not deserve to be accepted or be loved the same way they do. In the chorus line "Love is patient. Love is kind" we can see the personification being used because the word "love" is being use like it is a person. This stated line could be trace to the bible 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

Looking into the lyrics of "Same Love," Macklemore really uses different words to evoke emotion in his audience and draw their attention to what he's trying to get out at them. In the first line, "When I was in the 3rd grade I thought that I was gay 'cause I could draw/I told my mom, tears rushing down my face," From this line, we could see that at a young age, he started to worried about the judgement of others instead of accepting himself as for who he is. The imagery use in "I told my mom, tears rushing down my face" really set out an emotion for the audience because they could somehow connect to it in some ways. Another example is from the line, "Kid are walking 'round the hallway; Plagued by a pain in their heart; A world so hateful, some would rather die than be who they are." The word "plagued" is used to really capture the attention to the line because when we think of the word plagued, it's usually ties into the thought of torture and darkness that is involved. Also with the use of exaggeration in "some would rather die than to be who they are" we can see that the issues he was trying to get out was very important. Finally, another example is along the lines of the chorus "And I can't change, even if I tried; Even if I wanted to/ My love, she keeps me warm." Most people could relate to wanted to change themselves in some ways because of what other people might think of them, but to do that, it may be very hard or in some case, impossible. Also it is common for people to have their love ones as a sense of warmth and protection.

Pathos and Logos

In the video “Same Love” by Macklemore, the visual tells us a story about the life of a gay couple in that 7 minutes’ length of time from the moment he was born to the moment he was in his death bed. It gives us a glimpse of the hardship and struggles the couple faces, but most of it is overwhelmed by the love the couple has for each other.

In the opening of the video, we could see a wife being in labor while the family is there for her support. An example of pathos is shown when the mother was giving birth to the baby in the hospital. This visual of a baby being born usually gets people to feel the joy of a new arrival and be in awe of their cuteness. We could also feel the connection of love from the mom and her child when she gives him a little kiss on the hand. From the beginning, we could see that the child was born like any other child and with the same love.

Another pathos we could make out is when the boy smile turns into a frown when the bottle landed on him. And after the game we see him leaving and going into his bedroom upset and crying against the door. At that moment we could tell that the boy is having a hard time fitting in because of his gender difference.

We can also see pathos from when one of the guys gets on his knee pulling the ring out to propose to his boyfriend. The main character having the smile on his face and the acceptance of the proposal arouses the feeling of joy in the audience because it is a view of a new start of a family

Macklemore also uses a rhetorical device of logos to get his point across to the audience that being homosexual doesn’t make you different from any other human beings.

Going back to his childhood, we could see the kids running around and riding their bikes into the wood. This scene is shown as logos because it is normal for kids to go out and have an adventure playing around.

As we see the couple walking down the street holding hand, talking happily with each other, another display of logos we see is when the guy bump into the couple who also happen to walk in the street going in the opposite direction. We could see the disapproving looks they get from the guy looking back at them as they walk pass by.

Toward the end of the video, while one of the couples was laying in the hospital bed, the other one was by his side holding his hand in a show of support and love. This action could be considered as logos because it makes sense for love one to always be by each other side in a time of wellness and illness.
