The division has been in several wars since WW2. These wars include the Korean War, where they provided support as the Pusan Fire Brigade, and landed on Inchon. The Cuban Missal Crisis, where the division was stationed at Guantanamo Bay. The Vietnam War, where the Division did a variety of things, including fighting the Vietcong. Operation Desert Storm, where the division was the core of the forces sent to southeast Asia. Operation Iraqi Freedom, where the division did whatever was needed, including relieving the 82nd airborne division. And most recently, Operation Enduring Freedom, where the division was sent into Afghanistan to provide advisory support and maneuver elements.

In the Vietnam war the 1st marine division had just about the same responsiblites but were more ground based this time . Since they were not island hopping and instead on one big island.
In the 90s the division had humanitarian and relief missions as well as preparing for war and after the Gulf war they were sent out on more of the Humanitarian missions
