Was this a quality experience for Mavis?

This experience is not an ideal quality experience for Mavis mainly as it seems like she is being talked over not talked to. The DOH (2012): Compassion in practice states that communication is essential in caring for dementia patients.

Mavis end experience involved her being left behind a curtain be herself. You can argue that a good quality experience is on where patients with dementia feel supported and where families/carers are involved (NICE, 2015). However this did not happen therefore this hospital experience for Mavis is not a 'good' quality experience.

Sumita

Better communication by professionals introducing themselves, explaining their role in mavis’ care and the intervention they wished to carry out, following gained consent. Speaking to Mavis and assessing her capacity so that she can be involved in the care she receives and also to participate in decisions.

Attending to her psychological and social needs as well as her physical by asking how she was feeling, whether they had been in touched with bill or he was coming to the hospital. Making sure she was comfortable, in pain, if she understood what was happening, better pain management. Involving dementia friends/ advocate/ chaperone

Neighbour was not allowed to travel with Mavis leaving her in an unfamiliar scary situation with no help or familiar face. Understanding that Mavis has dementia and would require that familiarity would have been better.
Explain every procedure and why you are touching a patient, if Mavis becomes confused and agitated, strangers touching her without first gaining undertsnading and consent will upset her further.

Shouldn't talk over patients, it can confuse patients in general even if they do not suffer from dementia. Talk about treatments and plans with the patient involved.

Use lay-person terms and don't use terms such as x-ray without explaining the process. Don't assume the patient has previous understanding of procedures that they may not have experienced.

Inform patients of any moves before moving the bed it will help with disorientation and will keep your patient up to date with their care.

Firstly, Mavis shouldn't have been made to go in the ambulance alone. She should have been offered a familiar face to make this less distressing. Mavis is in severe pain as it is, she should't be made to feel scared as well. Secondly, no one here is prioritising Mavis' emotional needs, no one has contacted her husband. She is clearly not in a critical state (unconscious or comatose) some one should be prioritising this. Thirdly, no one is communication with Mavis (apart from the person with a smiley face), they are all discussing her, and this is making her feel uncomfortable as she does not know what they are talking about. No one has sat down and and explained things through with Mavis. Healthcare professionals here need to be acting as an advocate for Mavis emotion needs here, some one should be sat talking to her and making her feel at ease. Their should be a chaperone while physical assessments are taking place to explain and support Mavis.

Candy Collyer

Stakeholder Analysis

Stakeholder Analysis is where people are grouped together and identified by their role in a project. Depending on how crucial they are to the success of the project will depend on the approach needed in order to convince them to be part of the team. The tool helps you prioritise stakeholders and their influence.
In respect to Mavis and her admission to A&E, the tool could be used to improve dementia care in adults with a confirmed diagnosis or in them receiving the appropriate assessment so treatment is not delayed.
Some of the stakeholders identified in this case are the doctors performing the dementia screen, nursing staff in maintaining a safe environment and for a dementia trainer to provide relevant info.
