Laura: I didn't go in and look at any specific kids throughout the school district.

I will argue that this clip could be used as an example of a dispreferred action because she has the option to talk about Benghazi or not. She does not want to talk about Benghazi, and she makes an almost one-minute pause, following a "well." She then shifts the accountability by saying that she is there to talk about the Middle East, using that as the reason for not talking about Benghazi.

The clip begins when Paul asks Saoirse to describe the layers in her trifle and ends with them both laughing. It is not exactly the type of example we talked about yesterday, but I still think it demonstrates how establishing alignment is an ongoing interactional process.

This extract demonstrates a troublesource because Rogers’ statement, “You don’t sound so uncertain” creates a moment of interactional trouble for Gloria. Gloria responds, “I don’t? What do you mean?”, indicating that she has not understood or does not recognise Rogers’ interpretation. The conversation therefore requires repair before it can continue. Rogers responds by explaining what he meant, resolving the misunderstanding and allowing the interaction to move forward
