Ulster remained under a strong majority though the rest of Ireland lost support quickly. Strong republican leaders like De Valera were strong catholics and had a hate for unionist beliefs. Unionists were worried that for a start a republic may be granted but even more so that they could be punished for their beliefs. This lead to growth within the Ulster Volunteers

They still had a governor. However, 6 North Eastern counties became Northern Ireland, they remained in Britain and had a Unionist majority.
