That 70's Life

My dad had the experience to go to school during the 70's. He remembers that whenever they had to do reports they would have to go to the library, and to do their research they would listen to the radio or broadcasts depending on what they were studying. He says that they would use these huge headphones that weighed so heavy that their neck would hurt once they were done. He also mentioned that they liked to use these to listen to world events during that time, like the Vietnam war. He said him and his brothers would always be listening because they had a close uncle overseas and were always listening to any updates.

Now a days if I have a school paper or project I can just search up articles, videos, or interview on my phone from wherever I am at. I also carry these tiny earbuds that are wireless with me all the time if I have to listen to something, or even make a call.

Time to Make Mistakes

My dad remembers when he was in elementary, 1974, if he was working on a school assignment and he would mess up he would have to rip up the entire paper and start all over. So the day that he got his hands on his first eraser he knew his life was about to be way easier and less time consuming. He does mention that this eraser was big and it would be very messy. It wasn't like the pink erasers, this eraser would leave scraps all over and even stain the paper you were writing on.

Now that I am a college students it is so easy for me to make mistakes but it is also very easy for me to correct them. For example if I misspell a word it is very easy for me to correct it because I press the backspace button and try again. Having to start all over sounds like such a headache, so I am truly blessed.

One Notebook at A Time

My mom went to school in the 80's, the only difference is that she went to school in another country in a really small ranch. She says that as a child if she was fortunate enough to have school supplies she would have a "Scribe Notebook". She says that this notebook had limited pages and that instead of lines it had little squares, which I imagine is like graphing paper.

I find this notebook very interesting because it looks like a notepad more than a notebook. But I also thought it was interesting that the paper is squared instead of lines because now we have notebooks of all shapes and sizes. We have notebooks that are divided for different subjects, if its college ruled, or even composition notebooks.

My mom was raised in a very small ranch off the side of the road in Sinaloa, Mexico. She didn't always have the most newest tools that were offered in school. For example my mom went to school in the 80's but she says that when she had to sharpen her pencil her dad had to sharpen it with a knife. To her this was a tool when in America most students already had pencil sharpeners in their class.

Now that I go to school it is rare that I carry a pencil with me. Not only do I carry my laptop with me all the time but my writing utensil of choice is a pen. Having to have my pencil sharpened every day before school sounds like a task that I used to do but during school not before.

Smarter Than A Smartboard

My younger niece is in 3rd grade this year. As I asked her about the types of tools she uses, she explained to me that her whiteboard is like a tablet. She is able to go up and press stuff on it and the whiteboard reacts. Her teacher does her lessons off of this and is able to make her lesson more interactive, to my understanding.

This goes off to show how technology has taken over classrooms. When I was in school I was used to seeing a laptop rack being taken into the class whenever we had to take a test or something but now kids have an electronic whiteboard! This tool takes the time away from teachers having to go on the whiteboard teach and have all their hard work have to be erased at the end.

Just Dance!

My niece has mentioned that when she goes to P.E. class they stay inside and play a video game called Just Dance. She says that its her favorite part because she comes to school and plays video games.

This also reflects that technology has taken over all classrooms even the ones that require you to go outside and exercise. To be fair these games do get students up and active and for being in the state of Arizona I also believe its a great idea. Having to stay inside and still get up and moving and show the competitiveness of physical education.
