On December 14, 1819, Alabama joined the Union. Alabama was known for the production of cotton and slavery since it was first established. Even though Alabama never officially received a nickname, It was named “ Heart of Dixie” in the 1940’s-50’s. It has also been called the "Cotton State" and the "Yellowhammer State.". The first symbol of Alabama was given in 1853 and it was the state Bible.

The Southern war that took place in Alabama gave the state a lot of attention from the entire United States. The state played a key role in the American Civil War; its capital, Montgomery, was the Confederacy’s first capital. In 1860, After Abraham Lincoln was elected, the state wanted a war because they did not agree with his “anti slavery” republican party. The American Civil War remains the most significant event not only in the history of Alabama but also in the history of the nation.
