Remake of Actividad Cultural: Section 1737 by

As you know, this semester you will be attending or participating in two cultural activities related to the Hispanic World. You choose the activities that are most interesting to you (each activity should last between 1½ -2 hours, for a total of 3-4 hours).
You may, for instance, eat a Hispanic restaurant for one of your activities (but if you wish to enjoy an authentic Mexican meal as part of this assignment, it will only count if you travel to México). Another popular option is to watch a Spanish-language movie, (just make sure it is one made in Spanish for the Spanish-speaking market, not a dubbed movie from English).

Other ideas: Visit a Hispanic art exhibit. Participate or watch a Hispanic celebration (ie: 5 de mayo, a quinceañera, Las Posadas, etc.). Suggestions for some local restaurants (but there are many, many more): Q’ero or Café Secret are popular Peruvian restaurants. Costa Brava and Café Sevilla serve Spanish cuisine; Pampas and Puerto La Boca offer Argentinean food. Or how about trying some pupusas from El Salvadoreño, Cuscatlán, or Las pupusas Mama Lita? Be brave and try something new. But most of all, enjoy! [For more ideas, visit my Cultural Events webpage: http://www.miracosta.edu/home/ddetwiler/CulturalEvents.html]

INSTRUCTIONS:
(1)	Post a photo of you participating in or attending one of the events.
(2)	Make sure that you include a detailed description of what you did (who, what, when, where and with whom). You may complete this activity in English.
(3)	Finally, indicate what you learned from these activities.

For my cultural activity, I attended a baby shower of my friend who is Hispanic. The baby shower was at my friend’s church that only offers sermons in Spanish, so most of the guest only spoke Spanish. It was very interesting to experience the culture in person. I heard a lot of phrases and words that I have learned from this class. I was paying extra attention to body language and tones so that even though I did not know exactly what was being said I still could mostly understand what was going on. They served a dish called “birria” with rice and toppings. It was made from beef however, not the typical goat as my friend informed me. The host explained to me it was basically kind of similar to pot roast. I am not sure how or if there are certain traditions that take place at baby showers in the Hispanic culture because overall it was the same as any other baby shower I have been to besides the food and language. They both included food, games, gifts, and cake!

In addition to the baby shower, I watched the movie Bajo la misma luna. It was on the suggested list and the description said it was about a mother and a son. Being a mother to a little boy, I thought the movie would be interesting. It was a very touching movie that really emphasized the mother-child bond. I kills me to be away from my son while I’m just working, and I couldn’t imagine being away from him for 4 years like Rosario. Carlitos is a very determined child to get back to his mother and he faced many complications along the way. My favorite part was when Enrique throws the coffee at the police officers to save Carlitos from being caught even though it meant probably getting sent back to Mexico. Carlitos and Rosario were eventually reunited at the very end. I also heard a lot of phrases that I understood. It was a little more difficult listening to the Spanish while reading the English subtitles at the same time. It was a very good movie because my husband even was very into it.
