The current focus is on equivalent fractions, common denominators among fractions, and how fractions can be reduced. I posted fractions strips on your student's Google Classwork page underneath Math. These can be printed and cut up for your student to use in class. If students do not want to print and cut out the fractions strips, I also posted a website that allows them to use virtual fraction strips.

In Social Studies, we are learning about Native Americans in North America. This week, we focused on the Iroquois, the Eastern Woodlands, the Iroquois Trail, the lifestyle of the Iroquois, and their customs. 

In Science, we focused on the Earth and Moon by exploring the major similarities and differences between the two. In doing so, we also watched a recording of the first moon landing. 
*Ask your student about Apollo 11 and how Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
 They'll even be able to tell you what Mr. Armstrong was saying the first time he stepped onto the moon!

In Language Arts, we have been looking into different National Parks and their features. After looking through the provided list of National Parks, students were able to choose one to focus on for a research paper. This week, students started reading more about the National Park that they chose and have been compiling information from the articles. Your student has a guiding list of topics and questions that they can use to help organize their paper, but it is not mandatory that they use this. I have attached a letter below under "Announcements" explaining the research paper more in depth.

OSU Day:
For fun on Monday, we will be having Ohio State Day! Students can wear OSU gear or red/black!

National Park Research Paper:
As a part of our Informational Writing and Non-Fiction Unit, students will be researching a National Park over the next few weeks. They will need to write a FIVE-paragraph essay about their park. The research and writing will be done in class. However, students will need to incorporate a visual aid too, which some will need to be done out of school. Since we are virtual, students can create a presentation about their National Park using Google Slides. There will also be an oral presentation or sharing of their video for the class when done. If your student decides to do a video, they will need to pre-record themselves giving their presentation and turn it in with their Google Slide.

The students have chosen their park and have been provided with two educational websites where they can collect their research information. These projects will be due Thursday, February 18th.

At times, it can be a struggle getting back into the flow of classes after such a long break; however, I am lucky enough to have this great group of students who came back without skipping a beat! It made for a successful first week back.
