This resource can be implemented to promote positive civic engagement. Teachers can use the Civil Rights unit from the curriculum to teach students about slavery and the civil rights movement in American history. Teachers can show students the videos and then have students work on the DBQuest activity (ICivics, 2021). In this activity, students will analyze monuments and statues and discuss whether they should be kept or removed. Students will analyze primary sources and discuss the relevance to the current news topics about monuments from Civil War era. This lesson will help students develop historical empathy and become involved in the current conversation about Civil War monuments (ICivics, 2021).

Teachers can implement the Learning Plans and Student Tasks from the Classroom resources tab to teach social justice, civic engagement, and cultural awareness. First, teachers can choose a Learning Plan. There is one titled, "Cultural Relevancy in the Cafeteria" (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2021). The Learning Plan contains questions for the teacher to ask the students to foster classroom discussion. Then, teachers can implement an interactive Student Task, such as a Do Something task (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2021). In the Do Something performance task, students will create a skit, art, poem, or other artistic piece about the theme of cultural relevancy in the cafeteria.

Teachers can implement the Listenwise podcasts and resources to teach about global and cultural awareness, and diversity. Teachers can utilize the Latino and Hispanic American audio stories (Listenwise, 2021). Students listen to the stories from diverse speakers and then have a discussion about the similarities and differences of their experiences. After listening to the audio stories, students can explore the history of Mexican Americans on a virtual field trip. This will help students connect to their own culture, or learn about the history of a different culture. Teachers can also have students read about immigration policies and listen to real world stories from immigrants.

Educators can listen to the podcast titled, "How to Discuss Race, Racism, and Politics in Education" hosted by Marcus Croom (Teaching in Higher Ed, 2021). Then, teachers can use the ideas from the podcast to have a classroom discussion around the topics. This will help teachers with best practices and strategies for having conversations about these topics.

Using the Edutopia resources, teachers can implement project based learning to teach global awareness and civic engagement. For example, teachers and students can discuss and research environmental issues. Then, with teacher guidance, students can come up with a solution to an environmental issue. Teachers and students can watch videos that can support connecting with others around the world about this global environmental issue. Students could then connect with others and share their PBL solutions with a digital Pen Pal (Edutopia, 2014).
