The movie focuses on the different generations within society and their divisions. The conflict and age gap between teens and adults is outlined in a horrific way in this movie. The movie doesn't actually consist of a supernatural or inhumane being, instead the teens are the killers of the two main adults. Eden Lake is a very different yet effective horror movie as it subverts the conventions of a stereotypical horror movie. When the movie begins, we can see that the couple are by the lake and at this point, the camera is hand held, signifying a presence with them. We see the same movement quite a lot throughout the movie which shows the audience its significance. When we go on to find out that a group of teens are at the same place as the couple, we aren't too sure why they are significant and what their purpose is at the place. ]]> 2016-10-17 19:32:37 UTC https://padlet.com/naqvializa28/bhg7go5it3uw/wish/131290122 naqvializa28 https://padlet.com/naqvializa28/bhg7go5it3uw/wish/131296945 The teens make the couple suffer brutal consequences who only visit Eden Lake for a romantic weekend getaway but little do they know that they won't survive .  Most horror movies have billboards or signs and Eden Lake followed this convention because when the couple are driving into the gates, we see a billboard that has 'Eden Lake' written on it and it is tattered which could foreshadow the horrific events that await.  We also have a establishing shot and a tracking shot of the couple's car and we see them going somewhere remote and isolated. As they go through the woods, at one point we find out that the local shops are also very far away. There's one scene where one Indian boy, who is also forced to bring the main female character to a meeting point gets no signals on his phone and from this, the audience can infer that the location is somewhere rare and not visited by many. In the movie, we also see the difference between people of other ethnicity as the Asian boy is discriminated against and forced to do things he doesn't want to. He has no say in what he does and is controlled by the white teenagers. The parents of the white children are also very uneducated hence why the teens are so deviant and rebellious. The camera is hand-held at times which is quite effective as the audience have more to focus on. Many tracking shots are used so the audience can follow the journey of the characters where most of the time they are led to their death. An establishing shot is used at the beginning of the movie to set the scene whilst we see the two characters driving to their destination. This is quite effective as we see where they are going and later on we find out why they went there. Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory is relevant in this movie because at times, we see the white teens looking at the woman whilst the man goes to do scuba-diving. They also leave the audience thinking and leave them with expectations of what might randomly pop up on the screen. Although the killers are young teenagers, we as the audience still start to fear them whenever they arrive at the scene. There are no directions and hardly any way out so when the woman approaches her boyfriend, who has been captured by the deviant teens, she has to run out and find help but she fails. When the man is in the lake, the teens ruin their car, hide the keys and put infect their food with insects so that they have nothing to do and the last resort would be to leave. This foreshadows everything else that takes place later on. The teens, who are part of a gang, also have a dog who is very significant as it always barks at the moment when something bad is about to take place. He is used as symbol of warning for all of the characters. This is used by Watkins to foreshadow the death of them but this takes place after the dog is killed and this is effective in its context because their only source of warning is finished in seconds. There are also smaller sounds which may be insignificant yet still have an impact on the audience for example the snap of a twig may represent something bigger and more terrifying that is about to take place.
