LFA Lab Activity Library by Devon Burger

Instructions:

Under the relevant lab session, please write an activity title in the subject of your post. Then elaborate.

What did you do? How did you introduce it? How much time did it take? Did you use breakout rooms? Full group discussion? What would you change if you were to do it again? What worked really well?

Essentially: What information might someone need if they wanted to try this as well? The goal here is to help instructors in the future!

Speed Dating

I had 6 discussion prompts ready, but only ended up using 3 of them because there was a lot to get through, but you could certainly do all 6! I randomly assigned breakout rooms and gave groups 4 minutes to discuss a question; then re-assign and repeat.

Prompts:
What brought you to Terra.do?
What part of working in climate interests you most?
What is something that's brought you joy recently?
What area of climate change are you most interested in learning about and why?
What is one place in nature that is special/meaningful to you?
What is one goal you have for yourself in this course?

See attached slides 20-25.

I shared a Jamboard with 2 pages. The first had 5 different color sticky notes on it, one each for sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. The second had 5 different color sticky notes with questions:

How do we lead our individual lives?
How do we lead our community lives?
What does our institution (political, social, etc) look like?
What does our infrastructure (political, social, cultural) look like?
What is our relationship with nature like?

I asked fellows to think about what the world would look like if we solved climate change, both in terms of senses and in terms of the way we live. I told them to copy and paste sticky notes, and then edit the text. I gave them ~3 minutes for this, and then we discussed: What do you notice? What surprises you?

It ended up being a very nice and uplifting activity to end with!
