She could also use more frequent type of formative assessment, such as calling randomly on different students.

I found many examples of formative assessment in a visual arts and writing lesson. The teacher started with a model and several examples for the students to refer to while doing their work. the class engaged in a discussion regarding the content of the lesson. The teacher posted anchor charts which she could visually see if the students were referring to. The students did a partner share once their visual art piece was completed in which the students interpreted their artwork. Lastly the teacher utilized a rubric and conferenced with the students as summative assessment piece.

An additional formative assessment could have been to have the students give two compliments to each other's work and ask one question when partner sharing.

There are many ways I can utilized UDL in my practices. It all begins in my planning and thinking about my unique group of students. When planning, I can prepare multiple ways of presentation, multiple ways for the students to work with the material and multiple ways for the students to express their learning. Letting go of the "one size fits all" mindset and allowing flexibility (while keeping clear goals/expectations) will increase student engagement and success.

Elisa Huru here!
I am responding to the Pitch in Animal Calls lesson an integrated music and animal science lesson. Initially the teacher had the students role play being animals and the sounds they make as a engaging hook. Role playing is a creative process and formative assessment. Whole class and small group discussion was used, as well noting the pitch of hoots of owls on paper with pencil, much like musical notes. This was engaging as well and a formative assessment. In the end the students presented their piece and the group sang out the compositions of each student’s composition in unison, another assessment, formative or summative.
I would love to add, when I do this lesson with my students, a visual art piece, a painting or drawing where the artist draws the pitch being emitted from the owl, coyote, or frog. Then, I would have the students present their art, explaining the pitch and what the animal was feeling...hunger, fright, loneliness, peace, etc.
I would create an animal music gallery where children could go to sing 🎶 the calls create by all.

The UDL chart and tool is a must have in today’s diverse classrooms. Careful and adaptive planning, with brain research as the core, is information all teachers need. I loved the adaptive and creative arts tools for positioning and creating. The PECS are fantastic to aid in transitions and choices for our visual learners. I plan on using so many ideas and tools and sharing the videos, webinar, and graphics with my school community tomorrow! I especially LOVED the self-portraits utilizing the Zones of Regulation, an amazing check in system for my students, to be mindful of their mood, their peers’ moods, and how it relates to mindful learning. The process is the important part, the joy of creating, and understanding how we all learn, fantastic stuff!

After watching "Animal Legends: Integrating Art with Artwork", I noticed the teacher using several formative assessments within her lesson. First, she displayed and discussed anchor charts of shapes and forms of Native Artwork. She shared several examples of art. Then, students were asked to create a picture of their own showing what they learned from the class discussion and anchor charts. Once finished, students shared their art to discuss what the picture portrayed. Finally, the teacher used a class rubric looking for effort, creativity, shapes, and color. She also listened to the students explain their artwork to check to see if they understood the culture.

The teacher had the students orally share about their artwork. In addition, the teacher could have the students use sticky notes to add 2 positive comments about the use of shape and form to show understanding of the native american culture. They could also write what could be added to the art piece.

Using UDL practices within my classroom has reduced obstacles for many of my students. For example, I am currently using PECS for student learning. I have a set that I wear around my neck to help with expectations and transitions. Several students use PECS for each task that is expected for the day. Setting and working for goals helps increase engagement and learning.

The UDL Guideline is an amazing and useful tool for all student learning. I enjoyed watching the video and explaining art ideas on how to incorporate alternative media and material for student engagement. These ideas include grips for painting, ways to hang art work, different tools for painting, and adapting student position. What a creative use of the pizza box for an easel. Very resourceful and easy way to support student learning. I loved the use of the SMART BOARD and integrating technology for construction and composition of art.

I chose to watch the video, "Media Arts (grade 10): Graffiti- a digital identity."
This teacher uses peer assessments. It helps the kids by getting that information (whether what they're doing is good or could use work) from somebody. This is helpful in making their work better. They can get feedback that tells them what's working and what's not.
The teacher also created a website for the class. It's available to the kids whenever and it has different ranges of examples that the kids can look at and see what's working and whats not but the website also has his expectations as a teacher for the projects. He uses the website to interact with the kids in a professional way but also in a way in which the kids prefer and are comfortable with. I really like breaking the project into sections and having either peer critiques or critiques with me before they get too far into their work. That way if something isn't working they know it right away as opposed to when they are done and there's really nothing to do about it. I also think outlets like quizlet are helpful and with my kids if you can turn it into a game, they don't care if it's a quiz, they just want to win.

Teaching young children requires the approach of UDL. Young children are at very different developmental levels even within the same grade. They need information to be presented in a variety of forms. They tend to show what they know best by using hands-on activities. Helping students learn that trying and retrying are valuable learning tools. Sometimes we aren't totally pleased with what we have made but we always learn something from the process.
I felt the example of accommodations for a specific handicap end up assisting many different people in different ways was simple yet powerful.

I am responding to the Music/ Science animal noises lesson for k-2! I loved this lesson, it did an amazing job on incorporating multiple art elements. The first example of formative assessment was the role playing. Allowing children to role play gets the excited but also gives you great information about which students seem to understand the concept of the lesson. She uses quite a bit of informal question and answer, especially when trying to gauge their level of understanding of pitch. I would like to have seen more randomization and think pair share. She talks about the importance of less teacher talk, but the video only seemed to show her talking. I didn't see a lot of student's talking.

UDL Practices are simply part of great teaching. Engagement is everything when it comes to getting a student to make meaningful connections and learn. UDL helps creates the opportunity for students to focus on the process and not the product. It also allows for the process to fit the individual needs of each student. If a student is excited and engaged by an activity they are also going to put more effort into the assignment which will push their brains to figure out ways to succeed. Instead of them giving up when they first way doesn't work.

In the video “Teaching Pitch to Young Students” I saw multiple formative assessments as the lesson was being taught. The first assessment being the act of role-playing in which the students produce sounds they hear from animals. This allowed the teacher to gather what prior knowledge the students knew about animal sounds. Another assessment was the drawing of pitch sounds on paper. Students were asked to draw the pitch they heard from a recording of animal sounds. This allowed the teacher to gather what the student has learned about pitch from the lesson.

An idea that I would try if I were teaching this lesson is having the students draw a pitch on the white board and having the rest of the class follow the line that is drawn. This is another way of assessing the students but allows the student to become a bigger part of the class lesson. It is one way the students stay engaged, when they are able to be the “teacher” and show the class what they know.

One thing I look forward to as a teacher is always learning and growing with my students. I love that in this profession there is never a dull moment. Even day-to-day things change in an instant. Always keeping myself prepared by actively learning will keep me ready when things take a turn.

One thing I look forward to in my life outside of school is updating our new home over the next few years. While I have always remodeled our houses quickly in the past, this home is one that we are slowing down on and taking our time.

With all the different learning styles we see in classrooms, it is wonderful to have UDL practices to help teachers give today’s students a better chance at learning. When teaching, sometimes it’s important for me to take a step back and think like a student. When I can see that a student is struggling to understand a concept I quickly utilize a UDL practice, such as clarifying a vocabulary word, to help make the learning fit their needs. Just because most of the class knew the meaning of the word does not mean that EVERYONE knew the word. Helping to eliminate the stigma that everyone learns the same way.
