Then when the Jew arrived at the concentration camps the first thing they realized was the smell of burning fresh and a big fire. This event shows that Eliezer is

( Weisel 68)

In chapter 5 Eliezer and his father describes how they endured the Jewish holidays in the concentration camp, where they rebelled against god by refusing to fast on Yom Kippur, all while this is happening Eliezer father avoids selection and Eliezer undergoes surgery on his swollen foot.

This event is important because it shows how Eliezer and his father put themselves first over God because they knew if they fasted on Yom kippur it would have led to them being weak and fragile. This could have led to Elizer and his father being selected during the selection to be killed. This event connects to the theme Survive vs the collective good because they choose what was best for them during these circumstances over God and his religious holiday.

This event is also important because Eliezer pointed out in the book that the only thing that is keeping him going is his dad because without Eliezer his dad would have been most likely dead. This connects to the theme Family Loyalty and obligation because it shows how much Eliezer cares and values his dad which he pushes himself for him so he can take care of him and protect him.

"The night was growing longer, never ending" (Wiesel 98).

In chapter 7, Eliezer describes the terrible events they had experience on the train taking them from Buna to Buchenwald, where every few stops the SS officers would throw out the dead prisoners on the train, and how everyone on the train was starving for food and every time a worker would throw a piece of bread they would go to extreme extents like killing each other and betraying each other just for a piece of bread.

these events connect to the theme of state sponsored violence because it shows how the Nazis made the prisoners lose their humanity and making them even kill their loves ones just for a piece of bread, which cause prisoners like Eliezer to not care anymore when they'll die due to witnessing all the horrific event they loss hope and didn't care if they die now, later, or even tomorrow.

Arriving to Buchenwald

" Yet at the same time a thought crept into my mind: If only I didn't find him! If only I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength to fight for my own Survival, to take care only of myself.... Instantly, I felt ashamed, ashamed of myself forever" ( Weisel 106)

In chapter 8, Eliezer and his father arrive at Buchenwald, where Eliezer father becomes very sick to the point Eliezer can't no longer take care of him, this caused Eliezer father to sadly pass away.

This event is significant because it starts to show how Eliezer character starts to change from a caring person to an egotistic person because he starts to have self fish thoughts. For example, he thought that without his father he would be able to relieve himself from taking care of him and how he could use that extra strength to fight for his own survival . This demonstrates how Eliezer starts to realize his Father is becoming a burden to him and only holding him back. This event relates to the theme "Individual survival vs the Collective Good" because Eliezer starts to realize his father's death could relieve him from many responsibilities. This shows how Eliezer is picking his own safety and survival over doing the right thing and taking care of his dad.

This event relates to the theme "Individual survival vs the collective good" because he no longer cares about getting revenge for his father, Mother, or sister death but only cares about his life and well being.
