Who is Gemma Doyle?

Gemma Doyle is a 16 year old girl in the year 1895, who has lived in India for most of her life. After the death of her mother, Gemma and her family move back to England where she is sent to Spence Academy where she will learn to be a proper lady. Some of Gemmas traits are that she has a bad habit of talking back and she is not afraid to said what she thinks. After the death of her mother Gemma gets this ability where she can transport herself into these magical realms where anything is possible and in those realms Gemma gets to see and talk to her mother again. As the story goes Gemma grows with it, by the end of the book you can totally tell that she looks at things different and that shes become a different person. The theme that I got from Gemma is that this book is about femininity, because throughout the book you can tell that Gemma doesn't want what society wants women to be she wants to be free. Gemma is sent to Spence Academy where she meets 3 other girls, who want to have something different they don't want what society thinks women should do.

Gemma has these pierce green eyes which scare most people because there "Penetrating and wise, people call them." and "The Indians say they are unsettling, disturbing. Like being watched by a ghost." (pg 6) Gemma also has really bright and vibrant red hair. Gemma doesn't think about her actions "Yes, her cholera....Are you coming Ann?" (pg 305-305) Gemma talk about her mother and shes not thinking and being awfully rude. Gemma try's to talk like a proper lady and she does but sometimes she cant stop her self from saying things without thinking about it.

Her Last Words

"A Deer. She spies me and bolts through the trees. I run after her, not really giving chase. I'm running because I can, because I must. Because I want to see how far I can go before I have to stop." I think that this is one of the most important things that Gemma has said throughout the book. To me your last words are as Important as your first because its your last impression on the book. I feel like she finally feels free after everything has happened.
