After the death of her mother, Gemma and her family move back to England where she is sent to Spence Academy where she will learn to be a proper lady. Some of Gemmas traits are that she has a bad habit of talking back and she is not afraid to said what she thinks. After the death of her mother Gemma gets this ability where she can transport herself into these magical realms where anything is possible and in those realms Gemma gets to see and talk to her mother again. As the story goes Gemma grows with it, by the end of the book you can totally tell that she looks at things different and that shes become a different person. The theme that I got from Gemma is that this book is about femininity, because throughout the book you can tell that Gemma doesn't want what society wants women to be she wants to be free. Like being watched by a ghost." (pg 6) Gemma also has really bright and vibrant red hair. Gemma doesn't think about her actions "Yes, her cholera....Are you coming Ann?" (pg 305-305) Gemma talk about her mother and shes not thinking and being awfully rude.
