I’m on chapter 17 and haven’t exactly seen anything for a theme yet. I’ve found one quote for morality and that quote is in Chap 13 page 95 “but Mei knew they didn’t care. She couldn’t stand people who had no respect for others.”
-Rebecca

The most character development i have seen is during the marriage because we see Mei give more details of her leaving the ministry ,starting her own company
Since this happened less family’s wanted their sons marrying her and treated her differently.
One major theme in the book is the importance of family, the relationship of Mei and her mother how she has to take care of her because of her mothers stroke and marriage is important to many of the people in the book. Example of this is when left the ministry she was less looked to get married -Muhammed

I am currently on chapter 14 and have noticed a change in character within Mei. During the beginning of the book, Mei seemed to be isolated from her family, especially her mother. This is evident through the various arguments that they both have and how Mei dislikes it when she compares her to Lu. However, when Mei learns about her mother’s stroke, she becomes worried and spends a lot of time taking care of her. - Brandon N. (4th hour)

Because we know that if she would’ve listened to her family and continued into a career that they wanted she would’ve never been as happy. So I’m excited to continue to see the grow in her later on. Baylee (5th)

I feel like this book is really centered around self worth and doing what is best for you. Mei quit her job at the ministry because it wasn’t right for her and she started her own business because it would make her more happy. She constantly has to prove herself to her mother and she is always compared to her younger sister because she is considered more “successful” by being married and having a good job. But now as Chen comes to mei with the mystery of the jade, it could be the thing that makes or breaks her business.
-Carl Jacobsen 5th

I believe that mei has been developing in her self during the book because in the beginning of the book she just wanted to please her mom and her younger sister. But after awhile she knew that she shouldn’t be trying the please her mom she should try to follow her dreams and do what she wanted to do. Just like she took that illegal job that she wanted to do really bad. Later on she realizes that she shouldn’t have pushed her mom away that much when she had a stroke. From the beginning to the middle of the book, that’s something she has devolved on. (Ally Malark) hour 5

I believe that Mei has developed as a character the most. She has quit her job to become an independent women and start her open business. Also she has gone through ups and downs with her family, on one side her sister got married and is living happily, And on the other side her mother had a stroke and is in bad condition. And after all of that Mei is now embarking on a journey to find the eye of jade.

So far in this book I have not found a prominent theme. And as far as morality goes Mei has had many decisions to make, some being right and some being wrong.
Elijah Holmquist (5)

Mei challenges certain gender roles. She goes against traditional Chinese women’s beliefs. She quit he great job at the ministry because she felt like she needed to. Her sister getting married really showed her how she wants different for her own self. She challenges what people think about her, they doubt he success because she hasn’t married yet. Her and Chen now are embarking on a great quest to find the eye of jade. Being she is the boss and has an assistant really adds to the storythat women can do jobs men can.

- Jack Herlofsky (hour 5)

Throughout the second third of the novel, Mei has developed more as a character. With her mother being put in the hospital and in critical condition, it has made mei realize the more important things in life. In the beginning of the book she was more worried about what people would say because she quit her job at the ministry and how she was compared to her sister. Now she realizes that family is more important than silly things like jealousy and guilt. As she hunts for the jade, she learns more about herself and finds that she is a confident, strong woman who doesn’t need the approval of others to be successful.
-Carl Jacobsen 5th hour
