"I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father snobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth."

This quote is said by Nick, and explains his belief. Nick is saying that money isn't the only thing people are born to. The "fundamental decencies" Nick's dad told him about was money, but Nick knows there is more than that. Nick believes that these "decencies" are they way people are, the way people treat each other. Nick experiences people as being the Narrator in The Great Gatsby, and a main part in the characterization of people in the novel.

“I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.”

Nick said this quotes, which explains who he is. He is in this world full of affairs, parties, and secrets, but he is not a part of it. He knows what is happening around him because he listens when people tell him, yet he has nothing to tell them. He both loves and hates the life he is living with everything around him. Their lifestyle is different from his, and he is learning to live in it. This goes on throughout the novel because of the lives they live. Nick being a part of it, but not at the same time.
