An Aedile, or temple builder, was an optional office but was nearly mandatory for anyone wanting to reach the top. Aediles kept the public baths and temples in working order as well as organizing and funding all the games and holidays. Caesar served his term with another Aedile (2 were elected yearly) named Bibulus. This was a massive turning point for Caesar. Firstly because his acts placed him squarely in the populist camp — solidifying his political position — and secondly because this Aedilship allowed Caesar to become a household name. Caesar borrowed and spent several fortunes on games, throwing the most lavish and impressive games in decades.
- caused him to go into debt

One of the perks of being granted imperium is that after your term was up you got to hold a governorship of a province. This was a great way to pad your bank account and maybe go win some martial glory. Caesar did both and was granted a Triumph by the senate. A Triumph was the crowning of a man political career. It was recognition by the senate and the Roman people of your greatness. You had to conquer land for Rome and then your army had to hail you imperator (meaning victorious general). Then the senate had to agree to the Triumph. Generals were not allowed to enter Rome — this is important — unless they were entering Rome for one day under Triumph. The general would parade around Rome with his army, some paintings, and some slaves/enemy nobles captured in the conquest.Caesar came back to Spain to triumph and run for Consul. In order to run for Consul, you had to enter Rome as a free citizen and declare your intentions to run. As long as Caesar still held military command he could not enter Rome. In order to get a Triumph, you had to be a general. The plan was for Caesar to Triumph around Rome, then leave, then come back into Rome as a citizen a couple of days later (thus dissolving his military command) and declare his intentions to run for Consul. The senate — trying to make it so he cannot run — scheduled his Triumph after the elections. So Caesar had to either enter Rome as a citizen, giving up his military command and thus giving up his Triumph or not run for election. Caesar shocked everyone when he gave up his Triumph to run for election. Such a thing had never happened and it shows Caesar's commitment to his political career.

This office was Caesar’s life long goal. 2 Consuls were elected yearly. The men with the top 2 votes served together, alternating months. Caesar served with his rival, and old Aedile friend, Bibulus. Rome was facing a serious issue with land reform. Typically middle-class Romans were supposed to own small plots of land and work them for a living. Rich Romans had bought up all the land, forcing the middle class into the city where there were not enough jobs. This, in turn, meant that these people needed welfare to survive, placing a strain on the public funds. Caesar intended to fix this by buying up land from the rich and giving it to the poor. Bibulus intended to veto all of it. Caesar came into office day 1 with this bill in hand to present to the senate. He made the necessary changes to get it passed, but Cato came out and filibustered it. If a law was passed it would have to be posted in the public forum for 27 days, to be voted on by the citizens to get final approval. The senate’s plan was to hold off, so that when the bill came into law next month, Bibulus would be Consul and could ruin everything. Caesar got upset and just skipped the senate, posting it the public forum. Bibulus came to debate Caesar and veto it, but upon trying to do so, an angry crowd attack Bibulus and dumped poop on him. The bill was voted on by the public and passed. Then next month rolled around when Bibulus was Consul. He called the senate to order and condemned Caesar, saying the bill was illegal because he vetoed it and Caesar used mob violence to silence him (all true). Caesar said he did not hear the veto over the roar of the crowd. Nonetheless, Bibulus pressed for Caesar to be removed from office. After Bibulus spoke to accuse Caesar, and Caesar spoke in his defense, the previous Consuls got to speak. Two of them were Pompey and Crassus — the richest and most famous men in Rome. They were allies of Caesar and had helped him his entire career. In return, Caesar was to help them pass laws they needed. Once the senate heard these two men speak in Caesar's defense they were all terrified of Caesar and no one would speak out against him. Bibulus would be humiliated and ran home; he would not return to the senate-house for the term, giving Caesar total control for the entire year. Caesar then reformed how governorships worked, helped out some tax collectors for Crassus, and got Pompey's conquests ratified and his veterans settled on the land.

Caesar again found himself governor of not one but two provinces. Typically, you were given a governorship for a year or two but Caesar was given 5-year terms of Proconsul. Later he would get his friends in the government (Pompey and Crassus) to extend his governorship another 5 years, making it a total of 10. He would undertake his legendary 8-year conquest of Gaul, invasion of Britain, and invasion of Germany in this time. Remember how Caesar skipped the senate when passing that bill? Well the senate wanted to press charges for that — as well as for illegal warfare. Caesar had imperium though, so he could not be charged as long as he was governor or Consul. You had to have 10-year gaps between Consulships so Caesar wanted to be governor right up until he could run for Consul. The senate attempted to block this by saying that when Caesar had extended his term as governor 5 additional years, he never specified when that additional 5 years started. The senate said it started when the bill was passed; Caesar said it started when his original 5-year term was up. If the senate was right, that would mean there would be a 1-year gap between his governorship and when he was allowed to run for Consul — thus allowing the senate to charge him with crimes.

Caesar refused to give up his command, and the senate declared him an enemy of the state. This is when Caesar marched on Rome and started the civil war against Pompey (who had turned on him). Caesar won the resulting civil war.

A band of Cilician Pirates in the Aegean Sea captured Julius when he was on his way to study oratory in Rome. Caesar simply refused to behave like a captive. When the pirates told him that they had set his ransom at the sum of 20 talents, he laughed at them for not knowing who it was they had captured and suggested that 50 talents would be a more appropriate amount. He then sent his entourage out to gather the money and settled in for a period of captivity. Caesar made himself at home among the pirates, bossing them around and shushing them when he wanted to sleep. He made them listen to the speeches and poems that he was composing in his unanticipated downtime and berated them as illiterates if they weren’t sufficiently impressed. He would participate in the pirates’ games and exercises, but he always addressed them as if he were the commander and they were his subordinates. From time to time he would threaten to have them all crucified. They took it as a joke from their overconfident, slightly nutty captive. After 38 days, the ransom was delivered and Caesar went free.

- establishes his worth
- shows no mercy to enemies- crucify
- organize and recruit people
