Many people in the North felt slavery was wrong and should be abolished. This caused a divide in the country and eventually lead to the Civil War.

It wasn’t until 1860 when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States. This caused outrage in the South because Lincoln was elected without being on the ballot in ten of the southern states. The South didn’t like Lincoln because they felt that he was against the South and slavery.
Because he was elected, eleven of the southern states left the United States and formed a new union called the Confederate States of the Union. Lincoln knew they didn’t have the right to do that so he sent in troops to stop this from happening. The main reason why the Civil War started, were the differences in opinions about slavery. On battlefields.org it says "northern states one by one passed emancipation laws, and the sectional divide began to open as the South became increasingly committed to slavery". This shows that the union had a strong opinion against slavery while the South were committed to slavery and didn’t want to hear anything about freeing the slaves. Which are two polar opposite opinions on slavery which caused the country to split into North and South.
