Mound Builders are a group of 3 Native American tribes that built mounds. The Adena, the Hopewell, and the Mississippians. Some of the mounds were for ceremonies and some of them were for the leaders to live on. Some of the mounds were small, and some of them were really big. Also some of the mounds had rounded tops and some had flat tops.Did you know that there are mounds right here in Indiana?

The Adena built mounds that could be from less then 20 ft to more then 300 ft in diameter! The Mississippians built mounds that some were for burial, some strictly for ceremonial purposes, and some of the mounds were for the most important leaders to live on. The Mississippians even mounds that they shaped like animals! The Hopewell built mounds even bigger then the Adena! It is possible that the mounds were not only for burial, but also for ceremonial temples and maybe even for defense. It also provided high grounds during floods.
